The production is appropriately warm and clear and it refrains from the clinically digital presentation of many current bands. If Goreaphobia made any misstep at all in their execution it would be the needless slow fade-outs of some of the songs. That method will forever belong to. In short Goreaphobia have created a superb new album with Mortal Repulsion. It is one that could easily have occurred in 1993 but is all the more welcome and necessary in the leaner era of 2009. Hopefully this debut is a new starting point for the band as they seem to have plenty more to offer.

It’s about all this over-the-top imagery that’s intense and powerful in its own way. WP: Today video games are the obvious whipping boy of various conservatives. Back in the ’80s it was about the metal music corrupting our children. Do you guys take the chance to make any jokes or riffs on the little bit of irony that you’re combining metal and video games both of which have been targeted by the conservative right? AK: We’ve actually gone to great lengths to allow people with families to play our game. We have this awesome family filter where you can bleep out the bad words which invariably makes the jokes funnier. We also have a gore filter which actually throws up a parental advisory over the offending material in the videos.

We’ve played in front of thousands of people daily on this tour and of course Slayer is one of our all time favorite bands so touring with them has been totally amazing. Regardless of my lack of knowledge of this type of music I have ears and will attempt an honest review of what I hear and how it makes me feel. Please disregard the starred score. That said I did do some research and according to Wikipedia “doom metal” is “is a form of heavy metal music that typically employs very slow tempos low-tuned guitars and a much ‘thicker’ or ‘heavier’ sound than other metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair dread and impending doom. ” That pretty much sums up what’s happening with ak a majority of the time. The first few minutes of this self-titled four-song LP feature nothing but feedback distant vocals and a whole lot of despair. Ultimately that first track “Saline” does turn into something of a traditional song with some respectable down-tuned riffing with a very cool natural flowing drum feel.

BehemothGive Polish blackened death metal outfit Behemoth credit for one thing: It certainly lives up to expectations. ne glance at the trio—decked out as if Heath Ledger’s Joker moonlighted as a competitor at Medieval Times—gives a pretty good idea of the blazing cacophonous and downright blasphemous music it produces.  Behemoth assaulted the crowd at the Hot Topic stage with a theatrical and unrelentingly intense set. As guitarist-vocalist Nergal growled over each scorching riff mesmerized fans loyally extended their devil horns and swayed back and forth to the hypnotic double-kick rolls. It wasn’t as much a rock show as it was a dark vulgar mass—which was surprisingly palatable at 4 on a Sunday afternoon.

It was enough to keep people occupied until the main draw emerged after sundown. Everyone seemed perfectly happy many camping out on the grassy hill facing the big stages at the back of the grounds staking out their turf. If the day was perfect the music sometimes came off a little soft. Kudos to Eagles f Death Metal The Roots The Stills and Silver Starling who all delivered high-impact sets; others engaged the audience to varying degrees. Mraz had by far the poppiest set of the day going for easy but winning his wager with a Bob Marley sing-along. All roads led to Coldplay of course. The masses converged around the main stages after dark ready to pay tribute to one of the biggest rock bands on the planet.

At the time of mixing I was dissatisfied with the recording of the kick; it sounded too mushy and indistinct to me. I was very much used to hearing piercingly clean triggered kick drums in a death metal context and wanted that kind of clarity so we simply ran the original kick drum signal through co-producer Robert Wilkus’ modular synthesizer bank and created new voices for the kick sound. The sounds themselves are slightly different on every piece and basically the sound of the kick drum was electronically filtered. AAJ: It’s interesting you mention a setup that gives more space to the reeds and bass because so much sounds like it has been filled in at least with respect to improvised music as it’s usually presented. Please tell us how you define “space” in this context.

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals and Deer Tick will play “Celebrate Brooklyn” a free show in Prospect Park. With everyone likely heading to the Hamptons Saturday night is fairly quiet in the Big Apple.

The word “epic” is tossed around too much these days but nowhere is it more apt than in describing Behemoth’s colossal sound. Rousing opener “Daimonos” hammers out its chorus in a frenzy while the the mid-tempo barrage “v Fire and the Void” could cause earthquakes at the right volume. The essence of Behemoth is an approach to death metal with layers; complexity and unconventional song structures are the elements that keep the music fresh without stepping too far into the technical arena of bands like Decapitated and bscura. This is perhaps best exemplified by “Alas Lord Is Upon Me” which crescendos into a mid-paced riff and explodes into an uptempo storm at the end. Likewise the engaging guitar harmonies on “The Seed ov I” demonstrate an aptitude for crafting something mighty and memorable. Not every track can hold its own immense weight but even when sharp songwriting wanes Evangelion is still pleasing if only for its aural impact. Perhaps not reaching the heights of The Apostasy or Zos Kia Cultus (Here and Beyond) Behemoth’s latest outting is nevertheless a satisfying addition to Poland’s DM legacy.

I think that we’re definitely conscious of trying to make it a decent overview of the whole extreme metal underground. I think the reason you see a concentration of scenes as the years go on is because the book is arranged chronologically. So you’re going to see a period of the early nineties with a lot of essential death metal releases and then by the time you are into the late nineties and into the early part of this decade there really aren’t a lot of “essential” death metal records anymore. There are a lot of good records but there aren’t any super genre-defining records being released. What you have are different genres that are going through their glory days. The truth is the late nineties was the boom for metallic hardcore and metalcore bands. They were making the definitive albums for that genre during that period:.

For all of the country cool his lineage should evoke Hank Williams III plays it odd and hot taking on the depressed tension of his forebears as well as their addictions literary and literal. While those obsessions have yielded elegant traditional country songs and honky-tonkers wistful in their execution there’s a darker side to Hank III – the hard-core death-metal one he’s long put forth in concert as Assjack. Finally committed to recording such a fantastic morass Assjack’s debut goes beyond Williams’ hellbilly ruckus to find his sludgy frenzy furthered. It had to – Hank III wrote and performed this shebang alone. That gives focus to Assjack’s tunes of menace abhorrence and heartache as if he’s on a solitary mission to Hades. The violent "Chokin’ Gesture" and "Cut Throat" are short and not-so-sweet songs filled with curt contempt and gut-shot screams never to be confused with C&W’s good ol’ boy hoots ‘n’ hollers.

The music of Eagles of Death Metal does indeed blissfully borrow from the bombastic boogie of George Clinton?s Funkadelic and the hyper-charged early rock of Little Richard.
