While the overall performance was impressive on the surface Nergal and company seemed to have run out of things to express musically and they were clearly taking outfitting cues from the now-bankable Dimmu Borgir. From there the band started a slow but steady rise in stature. They dropped everything black metal from their sound while conveniently retaining the black metal look for ensured marketability and Nergal and his gigantic forehead started appearing in pin-up posters for the glossier metal magazines.

It is characterized by distinct growling vocals and extremely technical background music. Death is a Florida band started up by the late Chuck Schuldiner a guitar-god for the heavy-metal underground. Schuldiner known as ?The Father of Death Metal? loved all types of metal music but Death?s first three releases were pivotal in creating the death-metal movement which would later spawn a generation of bands and influence the modern metal scene. The most underrated piece of work in Death?s catalogue is also the band?s last? less than a year later Schuldiner would be diagnosed with pontine glioma a deadly type of brain cancer. The Sound of Perseverance features a more progressive style of playing than in the past and shows a switch from Schuldiner?s traditional vocals to a more demonic-sounding shriek. Schuldiner always surrounded himself with amazing musicians but the lineup of guitarist Shannon Hamm bassist Scott Clendenin and Richard Christy on drums is arguably the band?s best. Schuldiner?s lyrics range from the more traditional death-metal fare on ?Spirit Crusher? to the philosophical on ?A Moment of Clarity.
Review: Goreaphobia’s Mortal Repulsion is death magnificent

The production is appropriately warm and clear and it refrains from the clinically digital presentation of many current bands. If Goreaphobia made any misstep at all in their execution it would be the needless slow fade-outs of some of the songs. That method will forever belong to. In short Goreaphobia have created a superb new album with Mortal Repulsion. It is one that could easily have occurred in 1993 but is all the more welcome and necessary in the leaner era of 2009. Hopefully this debut is a new starting point for the band as they seem to have plenty more to offer.
