The result was mixed. While most people agreed that the effort was better than “Doom” the reception for “Genesis” was split. Many hailed it as a truly great death metal album while others decried it as being boring and derivative. With new guitarist Al Glassman (ex-Despised Icon) and drummer Jon Rice Job for a Cowboy’s new CD “Ruination” takes the next natural step towards good death metal. This is because with “Genesis” Job for a Cowboy wrote songs that said “Look at us. We’re totally a death metal band now. ” As a result the riffing and songwriting were clichéd and uninteresting.

They’ll definitely be among the first on the frontlines to be leading the New American Wave f Thrash movement in the coming years. Just don’t ask if they’re playing “klahoma Girl” or “Death To All But Metal” if you’re not that familiar with their music though. You could tell it had been a while since Kataklysm has played in ttawa when their lead singer Maurizio can’t find the stage at Babylon and holds up the show for a good ten minutes. r at least that’s what the rest of the band wanted everyone to assume when the frontman from Coliseum took the stage and attempted his best Quebecois accent in what looked like a wig.

Some people call them progressive metal call them power metal; I can’t help but regard the band as pure metallic royalty. There was just something about the band’s music coupled with Midnight’s siren-like vocals that made the union ‘transcend’ into another realm of metal that was and to this day is still inimitable. I remember talking with former Metal Maniacs magazine editor Jeff Wagner several years ago who steadfastly championed Transcendence calling it a perfect blend of creativity musicianship and production value.

comNot feeling like a punk? July 12 is all about the metal. The head banging skills of Brad Van Staveren the band’s guitarist is reason enough to check out this show. I’ve heard murmurs about the new album “Flesh of the Fallen” so be sure to keep an eye out for that. Also on the bill is the metal works of Master Pathology and Dreaming Dead.
