I think one of the most extraordinary performances I’ve ever witnessed was Ralph Stanley singing ” Death” at the Grammys. Nevermind your death metal or your gangsta rap. This is a guy that is going to scare the pants off you in a great way. It makes you look at yourself that kind of music. He sang it true and strong right in the middle of this ghastly arena that was designed for spectacle not for music maybe for gladiatorial contests.

Coming out of the Florida metal community he played with the seminal death metal band Death and he and his childhood friend Sean Reinert founded the band Cynic way back in the late 1980s. After one landmark album 1994’s Focus the band broke up briefly reforming as Portal and then he and Reinert worked together in a more acoustic band called Aeon Spoke. Finally 14 years after Focus Cynic re-formed and issued a followup album Traced in Air which I called.

Your lyrics are infused with heavy detail and raw emotion. What is it that normally gives you inspiration when writing lyrics and is there a concept behind the music you create?For such extreme music I feel you need to have extreme lyrics so my lyrics are the normal blood and guys or anti-religion based ones. Brutal and extreme lyrics just work for Death Metal music. Your new album "Sadistic Deeds… Grotesque Memories" is coming out how has the reactions been thus far? What can fans expect when they listen to your music?The feedback on the new CD has been great getting good reviews and the media and more important the fans are really into it.
