In the ’80s Bathory contributed to what we now know as black metal by introducing elements like “Satanic lyrics low-fi production and an inhuman vocal style that defined the genre. ” Wikipedia says so it must be true. More importantly for this list anyway the band also aided in creating Viking Metal with their 1988 album Blood Fire Death which introduced more epic sounds and Viking lore to their music. Bathory’s music became even more Norse-centric with subsequent releases such as Twilight of the Gods and Blood on Ice. Many other bands have built more rockin’ Viking Metal since Bathory birthed the genre but lets not look past the group that made it K to scream-sing about trolls and Valhalla. “Blood on Ice”.

With a combination of strong guitar work rumbling bass grooves thunderous drumming and soaring vocals heavy metal has pushed its way into territory that other genres won’t. Amidst the countless acts out there one band has stood above the rest becoming the most recognizable metal group to this day. With the fame they’ve achieved and the status of two gaming franchises attempting to replicate playing in a band the two have come together in this touted spin off. However one small Texan band named Watchtower raised the bar for generations to come to both marvel at and spend their teenage years boarded up in practice rooms to best. Watchtower’s 1989 technical metal opus “Control and Resistance” contained all of the hallmarks of technical and progressive we know now and still stands among the elite of musical shred fests. It wasn’t until 1993 however that saw a primal scream from the death metal genre in an explosion of talent which building from the inspiration brought on by thrash metal. Pestilence’s “Spheres” Atheist’s “Elements” Believer’s “Dimensions” Demilich’s “Nespithe” Gorguts’ “The Erosion of Sanity” Cynic’s “Focus” and genre spearhead Death’s most technical album “Individual Thought Patterns” all surfaced in what was the heyday of technical metal. As it would be the scream of death metal acts would be a final one as a new wave emerged to wipe the slate clean. The early 90s were a time when grunge prospered and technical metal just didn?t sell enough albums for labels such as Roadrunner to support them properly. In the metal world simpler visceral music was in with acts like Sepultura Pantera and White Zombie leading the new sound.
