It wasn’t without criticism though. Many thought the band did a little too much experimentation. ne music critic labeled the sound on the album as a mix of “metalcore deathcore death metal and even some punk stylings. However none of them seem to want to step up and take control. “Regardless of the confusion the album threw some of its listeners’ way it caught the attention of the producer of “Teeth” a horror-black comedy B-flick about a girl who has teeth in her vagina. Five of the band’s songs made it onto the soundtrack of the 2007 movie and gave the band some much-needed exposure and publicity on a national level.

All exhibit grindcore progressive metal and screaming vocals. However Worse Than Alone has a variety of new sounds that have not been heard in the previous albums. The Number 12 Looks Like You’s current label Eyeball Records describes the new album as follows: “Worse Than Alone miraculously fuses literally every style of music the band is influenced by from classical and jazz to screamo grindcore and death metal into one molten morass of auditory carnage. ” And the main song that fully represents this evolution is “The Garden’s All Nighters. ” The song structure on this track is probably the most interesting of all the songs on the new album. It starts out with a jazzy metal guitar riff then there’s one minute of mathcore chaos followed by a sudden transition of full-blown smooth jazz guitar then percussion with soothing vocals and it ends with a crescendo of grindcore. f course The Number 12 Looks Like You’s album is not full of these hybrid songs – the band still has its roots in progressive heavy metal and grindcore.

“We tried to hold nothing back and decided to take chances to avoid putting out a safe by-the-numbers’ record. “He contined “There are songs based on pure aggression and chaos like ‘My Demise’ and ‘Embracing Annihilation’ that showcase the thrash metal and melodic death metal influences that have been the bedrock of the SHADWS FALL sound. There’s tons of shredding guitar leads double bass drum insanity and full-on screaming. ” Elsewhere “Songs like ‘The Taste f Fear’ and ‘Picture Perfect’ owe more to the production of pop rock bands DEF LEPPARD and BSTN than say TESTAMENT or CARCASS. There’s huge vocal melodies harmonized gang vocals and layers that push the songs to new levels. It may sound schizophrenic but it all makes sense and creates a dynamic that I believe separates this album from a lot of the cookie-cutter metal records flooding the market today.
