It is the accumulation of years of hard work; with Death’s last album in my eyes Schuldiner finally realized his true potential as both a guitarist and a songwriter. The latter characteristic is especially important in the evolution of Chuck Schuldiner as a musician. In the beginning Schuldiner’s lyrics were on par with most of the other gore-obsessed death metal bands of the late 80′s with topics ranging from regurgitated guts to maggot-infested zombies. ver time Schuldiner opened up to a wider more intelligent range of topics. The Sound f Perseverance had many subtle lines throughout that are poetic and deeper than most expected from a band like Death. Lines like “passion is a poison laced with pleasure bitter sweet” and “shallow are words from those who starve” were brilliant and a fresh breath of air for its time. Let’s not forget the other fresh breath of air during this era of Death; drummer Richard Christy.

The demented sounds of Cradle of Filth’s shock and gore-based aural assault were tempered by the occasional slow orchestral passage as played and sang by keyboardist and backing vocalist Rosie Smith. The haunting melodic music served as a notable counterpoint making the inevitable resurgence into crushing brutal metal mayhem seem that much more intense with the beauty only highlighting the ensuing savagery. Black metal is a subculture all its own and Friday night’s show was a celebration of all that was black evil leather and spiky. While the satanic and nihilistic nature of Cradle of Filth’s music precludes radio play and the vast majority of the attendees were clearly devoted fanatics of the band even casual metal fans were able to appreciate the distinct texture of the music and the theatrical flair the band presents. Mainstream music they are not but anyone who enjoys ultra-heavy metal or just likes to dress as if they do would do well to catch this British band the next time they are in town. There are many more women in metal bands these days but they are still faced with that choice. It never happens to a guy ? they can take off their shirts but they?ll always be the musician first. You?ve said that your shows are different from many death metal bands ? how so?Well we have five well-established musicians and unlike many metal bands we highlight everyone. So everybody gets their solo spots like you?d see with classic metal bands like Whitesnake. And I think some people are surprised when they see an extreme metal band playing a drum solo. How do you sing brutal vocals without damaging your voice?I train a lot. I learned basic singing techniques like proper abdominal support and breathing and I do a 10-minute warm-up routine before every show.

It was a time that despite the advances of Death Metal and Grindcore was a sad time for thrash metal fans. Anthrax Megadeth Metallica and Slayer gained commercial fame with horrible albums. It is a scientific fact that if you played thrash in the 80s you sucked in the 90s. Kreator was not an exception to this rule. But let us not dwell on this horrible time for aside from the big three most bands have returned.

This force’s name is Abeo Cygnus. which the band says is Latin for “to once have been a swan. This metal band is a musical hybrid that draws influences from melodic death metal from Europe and metalcore from the United States. Abeo Cygnus is comprised of Bixby High School seniors Ryan Welch on vocals and Shane Marker on bass; Bixby freshman Austin McFerrin on drums; Berryhill senior Jake Rice on rhythm guitar and Matt McDowell of the University of klahoma on lead guitar. This metal band — with its powerful mind-obliterating musical talent and energetic live performances — has grown past the measures of the garden-variety garage band yet they’ve been together for only little more than a month. The ferocious growls spine-cracking drums bone-assaulting bass and ear-splintering guitars of each of the members make for something of an atomic heavy-metal explosion. Three of the five members of Abeo Cygnus were also members of Phaethon in the 2008 Battle of the Bands which the members admit did not work out in the long run.

ne of his "fun side projects" – more like "supergroup without bragging about it" as of its last incarnation – is Revolting Cocks which released Cocked and Loaded in 2006; despite cameos by Gibby Haynes Jello Biafra and Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen it was a little too jokey disjointed and disinterested with itself. Cut to now a year or so after Jourgensen announced his retirement something the Stones have done every year since they had their first experience with incontinence. As everyone expected that fleeting fancy has melted away and Uncle Buck Satan is a hungry dude again revitalized by a group of young guns who know what this juggernaut should have evolved into by now. And from opener "HookerBot3000" (picture Rob Zombie re-writing "Radar Love") to that song’s closing remix it’s as menacing street and streamlined as Ministry – not just Revolting Cocks – could hope to be without George Bush’s being around anymore to provide grist for Al’s anger mill.

This is tough aggressive music and the vocal is another instrument that has to keep pace or it will get lost in the mix. Although I’ve often joked that everyone realized they couldn’t copy the awesome that is King Diamond so they just ran the opposite direction. So yes death metal is certainly a brutal version of metal and is admittedly not for everyone. But even this kind of music is spread out now amongst the subgenres of folk melodic and brutal (amongst others) so I think it’s likely many people could find something they might enjoy. Melodic is probably the most user friendly form of death and a good place for someone to start getting their feet wet. But for those of us who do it packs the majesty of thrash with mind blowing techniques to cause carnage in ye’ old headphones. Under the animal aggression and sweat is the same things we all love about metal it’s just played to the Nth degree and for those who like it it’s the ultimate extreme sport.
