It is the accumulation of years of hard work; with Death’s last album in my eyes Schuldiner finally realized his true potential as both a guitarist and a songwriter. The latter characteristic is especially important in the evolution of Chuck Schuldiner as a musician. In the beginning Schuldiner’s lyrics were on par with most of the other gore-obsessed death metal bands of the late 80′s with topics ranging from regurgitated guts to maggot-infested zombies. ver time Schuldiner opened up to a wider more intelligent range of topics. The Sound f Perseverance had many subtle lines throughout that are poetic and deeper than most expected from a band like Death. Lines like “passion is a poison laced with pleasure bitter sweet” and “shallow are words from those who starve” were brilliant and a fresh breath of air for its time. Let’s not forget the other fresh breath of air during this era of Death; drummer Richard Christy.

With a new singer and all male members they dropped the girly second word and are now known strictly as Jerusalem. The metal band gets inspiration from pretty much anywhere but don’t be fooled by their hardcore music. Rhythm lead guitar and backing vocalist Brian Fisher said “We’re not just straight-up hardcore death metal music. ”Jerusalem’s new singer Geno Echols has helped write more original songs for the band. Echols drummer Greg Riggs and bass player Mike Mongo add sounds that collectively make the group a whole. Fisher is an Audio Engineer from Dreamscape Audio and brings his technical skills to the band’s intricate songs. Fisher’s engineering endeavors are a good addition to the band.

3 2009Belgian webzine. A few excerpts from the question-and-answer session follow below. Rock ‘n Balls: GRGRTH is traditionally seen as the flag-bearer of “true” black metal so I was kind of surprised to see you guys touring with CRADLE F FILTH which is a band that has often been described as a “commercial” black metal band. How do you feel about the association of both bands? How did this project come about?King: We would never play one show with another band if we would take into consideration that we would be viewed through their music or philosophy. We represent GRGRTH and no one else.

It was a time that despite the advances of Death Metal and Grindcore was a sad time for thrash metal fans. Anthrax Megadeth Metallica and Slayer gained commercial fame with horrible albums. It is a scientific fact that if you played thrash in the 80s you sucked in the 90s. Kreator was not an exception to this rule. But let us not dwell on this horrible time for aside from the big three most bands have returned.

There are many more women in metal bands these days but they are still faced with that choice. It never happens to a guy ? they can take off their shirts but they?ll always be the musician first. You?ve said that your shows are different from many death metal bands ? how so?Well we have five well-established musicians and unlike many metal bands we highlight everyone. So everybody gets their solo spots like you?d see with classic metal bands like Whitesnake. And I think some people are surprised when they see an extreme metal band playing a drum solo. How do you sing brutal vocals without damaging your voice?I train a lot. I learned basic singing techniques like proper abdominal support and breathing and I do a 10-minute warm-up routine before every show.

The demented sounds of Cradle of Filth’s shock and gore-based aural assault were tempered by the occasional slow orchestral passage as played and sang by keyboardist and backing vocalist Rosie Smith. The haunting melodic music served as a notable counterpoint making the inevitable resurgence into crushing brutal metal mayhem seem that much more intense with the beauty only highlighting the ensuing savagery. Black metal is a subculture all its own and Friday night’s show was a celebration of all that was black evil leather and spiky. While the satanic and nihilistic nature of Cradle of Filth’s music precludes radio play and the vast majority of the attendees were clearly devoted fanatics of the band even casual metal fans were able to appreciate the distinct texture of the music and the theatrical flair the band presents. Mainstream music they are not but anyone who enjoys ultra-heavy metal or just likes to dress as if they do would do well to catch this British band the next time they are in town.
