Eagles of Death Metal Bring the Sexy at the Fillmore

That’s where the Eagles of Death Metal swagger into the picture. Contrary to their deliberately ludicrous moniker Eagles of Death Metal do not sound at all like death metal nor do they much sound like the Eagles. They are a pile of double entendres and blues-rock snatches stitched together with bouts of Zeppelin-inspired pelvic gyration. Distilling the “sex drugs and rock ?n roll” trope down to its purest essence the band has but one rudimentary goal: get asses moving out on the dance floor. Judging by the audience at a recent sold-out gig in San Francisco’s famed Fillmore Auditorium those asses consist mainly of young ladies a bit too entranced by the band’s sex-centric image over-the-hill rockers taking the band’s purist 70’s approach with a straight face and quasi-hipsters appreciative of the band’s tongue-in-cheek humor and superb technical ability.

“Changing lyrics and melody helped Brandon to adapt to his own thing and not try and be Tripp” said guitarist Nick Portuese. “The change has been for the good. “Before Jenkins’ death the band was getting ready to gear up and move their music to the next level. They had been playing gigs locally and in Birmingham and had just won a battle of the bands contest. Now things are picking back up again.

It differs from every album you know sometimes there?s definitely influence from the Swedish metal realm like In Flame and Soilwork. There?s darker elements like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir but then there?s also the influence from the Danny Elfman Tim Burton film score stuff. I?ve been called melodic death metal before so I guess that would be the genre right there for you. xFiruath: Since the sound changes so much from album to album do your lyrics stay consistently in the same style? Dan: Yeah the lyrics are pretty consistent. I don?t really base them on anything thematic. It?s basically just whatever is going on at that point in my life anything that?s happened in real life. I don?t base it on fantasy or anything like that.

n songs like “Bile Towers” and “Skin From Skull” Perry’s guttural growls and demonic screeches sound like they come not from her abdomen but straight from the bowels of hell. With sandblasted screams that many death-metal vocalists would envy Perry is an anomaly in a genre in which ugliness is often a virtue. “I didn’t grow up with death metal” Perry admits. “I didn’t grow up with grindcore. I was into a lot of different music than this but they asked me [to be in the band] and I got introduced to it and I love it now.

The underground had arrived and the metal scene was put on notice. Inside a hectic touring schedule the band continued to gel as a foursome and started working off of the axe work Kirk brought to the table. This would lead to the devastating album Ride The Lightning and its impact would shift continental plates in the metal scene. Music was set to shift in new directions but the innocent people occupying the surface world were still unaware of the silent change in direction. If metal fans were amazed that the band went straight to 10 on their debut the sophomore album literally rewrote the rules and catapulted Metallica as leaders of the underground. With a formula to explore and sound to perfect Metallica returned to the recording studio to retool the weapon into one of mass destruction. When Master f Puppets hit the streets Metallica officially conquered the metal kingdom and put the surrounding territories on notice.
