CD Review: Eagles of Death Metal’s “Heart n”
St. Joseph News-Press M -
Then there’s the L. outfit Eagles of Death Metal who would just prefer to lay down some scuzzy-and-fuzzy guitar while tossing sexual metaphors and tongue-in-cheek choruses around like dollar bills at a strip club. They do that on their latest album “Heart n” which is a fun dose of filthy-sounding seventies guitar grooves with a sugary glam rock center.

After a malevolent ?I Like To Move In The Night? Eagles do their usual encore of covers ? tonight it?s the Ramones? ?Beat n The Brat? and a thunderous version of The Damned?s ?New Rose?. When they?re done Jesse puts down his guitar and does a weird kind of victory dance shaking his ass and punching the air. It?s funny daft and an expression of music as pure escape. ?Noble Beast? is certainly not those. But Bird doesn?t need any of the prescribed classifications. The hip-hoppers dancers and even death metal rockers enjoy Bird?s absolutely brilliant ingenious lyrics and sound without the help of an iTunes classification. And there is the signature example of how the Chicago native has appealed to such a vastly diverse audience.

Sandspur (subscription) FL -
Cynic makes a comeback with Traced in Air a collection of eight melodic atmospheric metal songs. Those of you familiar with both the music and legacy of Cynic will undoubtedly recognize their contribution to the obscure metal subgenre “technical death metal. ” Not only did they introduce odd time signatures and breakneck guitar and bass riffs but they also experimented with jazz-fusion and eastern-style sounds. “Focus” was said to have been among the defining albums of the style that many other bands such as Pestilence Meshuggah and Cryptopsy took on. Having reunited around 2007 Cynic brings new music to the table in the form of an aural adventure called Traced in Air. And while not having abandoned their roots this is a clearly different effort than Focus.
