CD Review: Eagles of Death Metal’s “Hard n”

Then there’s the L. outfit Eagles of Death Metal who would just prefer to lay down some scuzzy-and-fuzzy guitar while tossing sexual metaphors and tongue-in-cheek choruses around like dollar bills at a strip club. They do that on their latest album “Heart n” which is a fun dose of filthy-sounding seventies guitar grooves with a sugary glam rock center.
Cynic’s reunion long-awaited
Sandspur (subscription) FL -
Cynic makes a comeback with Traced in Air a collection of eight melodic atmospheric metal songs. Those of you familiar with both the music and legacy of Cynic will undoubtedly recognize their contribution to the obscure metal subgenre “technical death metal. ” Not only did they introduce odd time signatures and breakneck guitar and bass riffs but they also experimented with jazz-fusion and eastern-style sounds. “Focus” was said to have been among the defining albums of the style that many other bands such as Pestilence Meshuggah and Cryptopsy took on. Having reunited around 2007 Cynic brings new music to the table in the form of an aural adventure called Traced in Air. And while not having abandoned their roots this is a clearly different effort than Focus.
Eagles of Death Metal Bring the Sexy at the Fillmore

That’s where the Eagles of Death Metal swagger into the picture. Contrary to their deliberately ludicrous moniker Eagles of Death Metal do not sound at all like death metal nor do they much sound like the Eagles. They are a pile of double entendres and blues-rock snatches stitched together with bouts of Zeppelin-inspired pelvic gyration. Distilling the “sex drugs and rock ?n roll” trope down to its purest essence the band has but one rudimentary goal: get asses moving out on the dance floor. Judging by the audience at a recent sold-out gig in San Francisco’s famed Fillmore Auditorium those asses consist mainly of young ladies a bit too entranced by the band’s sex-centric image over-the-hill rockers taking the band’s purist 70’s approach with a straight face and quasi-hipsters appreciative of the band’s tongue-in-cheek humor and superb technical ability.
