It’s supposed to be black-and-white with a corpse on there and blood and that’s death-metal you know? But it doesn’t always work like that. We’ve done that and we’ve moved on. It’s doubtful that other death-metal bands will follow suit but then again In Flames have always been the kind of band that sets trends instead of following them. After all the Swedish metallers are considered pioneers of what has become known as the Gothenburg sound and they’ve influenced scores of other musicians since forming back in 1990. “That makes me feel really old sometimes” Gelotte said with a chuckle. “Most of the bands that sort of sounded like a rough copy of In Flames on their first demos have evolved into something of their own and that’s all that matters. You always have to take what you’re inspired by mix your own juice with it and come up with something that hasn’t been heard before.

Going Down-Market: Satan Rules the Night at Jaxx
Washington Post – Mar 2, 2008
People trek to the suburban parking lot from all over the country and Jaxx’s Web site gets 8500 hits a day mostly from overseas. "It’s so strange to be there in this strip mall; it’s surreal" Albert Mudrian editor of the new extreme metal magazine Decibel said of Jaxx. "I’ve seen Napalm Death there twice. "All this isn’t entirely great news for Bittinger who calls music — mostly extreme metal — "my life. Black metal was meant to be private he says for people who get it. There’s deathcore and there’s a metalcore scene out there and it’s a complete trend. I don’t want anything to do with that. We just wanted to write the most crushing and technical death metal we could come up with and make little metalcore kids sh– their pants. A lofty goal to be sure — one Ruskin hopes the band will have no problem achieving both with their record and with their wildly unpredictable live sets. “With this record we wanted to show everybody that there’s an underground genre of death metal that needs to be heard more” he continued. “It requires 20 million times more talent [than most subgenres of metal]. It’s harder playing arpeggios and gnarly riffs than it is to just play two open notes on the E string.

The group’s original lineup included such former Mercyful Fate bandmates as Hansen and Denner but over time bandmembers would come and go (the only constant member besides their leader has been guitarist Andy LaRocque). King Diamond’s first three solo releases 1986′s Fatal Portrait 1987′s Abigail and 1988′s Them are widely considered to be Diamond’s finest as the singer continued to issue further releases until the early ’90s (1989′s Conspiracy 1990′s The Eye). It was also around this time that Diamond found his name embroiled in controversy — due to a Geraldo Rivera TV special on music with supposed “hidden messages” and when. Come the early ’90s Mercyful Fate was constantly being name-checked as a prime influence by just about every new thrash and death metal band which led to a re-formation of the original group (save for drummer Ruzz) and such further releases as 1993′s In the Shadows (which included a remake of their early track “Return of the Vampire” with. By the middle of the ’90s Diamond began issuing solo albums again (simultaneously with his Fate output) as such titles as 1995′s The Spider’s Lullabye 1996′s The Graveyard 1998′s Voodoo 2000′s House of God and 2002′s Abigail II: The Revenge were issued.

concert at the Milwaukee Metalfest. Blackwater Park titled after an obscure psychedelic prog outfit from the ’70s was released in early 2001. The album created a huge buzz among progressive metal fans who had begun to lump the band in with other experimental metal bands like Tiamat. Instead of waiting until the buzz died down the band released Deliverance in the fall of 2002. The following year Opeth surprised fans with the release of Damnation an album that was almost completely devoid of any heavy metal trappings and focused instead on acoustic instruments and traditional songwriting. Ghost Reveries arrived in 2005 and proved to be a return to form for the band. Opeth returned in 2007 with Roundhouse Tapes: Opeth Live and in 2008 with the all-new studio album Watershed.
