Clutch have been on more record labels than well anyone we know — and it appears they took good notes. The band has decided to launch its own label called Weathermaker Music. Clutch will issue all of their future releases through the label and this summer they plan to release a live DVD with a companion CD… Death-metal innovators Cannibal Corpse have already begun work on the follow-up to 2006′s Kill but don’t expect the record to be finished until the winter. So in the meantime they’ve assembled their first-ever career retrospective. In July the band will issue a three-disc DVD set called Centuries of Torment: The First 20 Years. It will feature live and rare footage plus interviews with the band.

“No Country” is not for people who have problems with violent movies. Having said that anyone who likes tight storytelling minimalist cinematography and music and endings that don’t blow up the screen and leave something to the imagination will love the Coen brothers’ award-winning movie if they look past the blood and gore. As for me the violence is essential to the screen adaptation of the 2005 Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name. (The title in turn comes from a line of poetry by Yeats. ) By holding the threat of sudden death hanging over nearly every scene the Coens have made Chigurh (played with Hannibal Lecter-like cold-bloodedness by Javier Bardem) the scariest movie villain in a long time. Even Bardem’s hairdoa cross between a Beatle cut and a Professor Snape mullet is enough to send shivers down the spine of the most jaded blood-and-guts movie fan… As for me the violence is essential to the screen adaptation of the 2005 Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name. Set in a Texas border town in 1980 the action in “No Country” begins when antelope hunter and former Vietnam Vet Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) discovers the scene of a botched heroin deal and relieves a dead courier of $2 million in a satchel. Chigurh hunts Moss and both are pursued by Bell (Tommy Lee Jones at the height of his acting talent) a third-generation lawman who feels he is helpless against the new crop of criminals but who plods on anyway. As the body count increases (courtesy of Chigurh’s weapon of choice a gas-powered cattle killer) the assassin closes in on Moss who pigheadedly hangs on to the money that he found.

Celebrate local music and enjoy performances by some of Tampa Bay’s brightest. Rebekah Pulley will debut some new material including Tumbleweed an airy and calming ditty she wrote during gridlock on the Howard Frankland Bridge. (If only we utilized our time stuck in traffic so well. ) Other special treats may include collabs between quick-witted rapper Aych and the sassy brassy Bird Street Players. We won’t toot our own horns any further — we’ll let them handle that — but we’ll be there and we urge other Tampa Bay artists to come drop off a demo chat about new work and celebrate the local scene.
