chorus of seniors who cover rock songs. The Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls offers girls 8?18 a one-week course in starting their own band leading to a performance at the end of the week. Filmmakers Shane King and Arne Johnson follow teenagers Laura a Korean adoptee who likes death metal and Misty a former gang member who has bounced from halfway houses to foster homes and youngsters Amelia and Palace both of whom are being raised primarily by their divorced mothers. Laura and Amelia are already musicians while Misty and Palace will be by the end of the week. But how they get there we'll never know since the filmmakers' and perhaps the counselors' attention seems to be elsewhere. If you're wondering whatever happened to the riot grrls of the '90s well they became counselors at a camp where music seems secondary to "empowerment. " During the course of the week the girls learn an anthem that begins "My brother says I cannot carry a tune" and practice kicking assailants in the crotch in self-defense class… The Portland camp does have a separate hip-hop session and the New York offshoot's concert I attended demonstrated that at the very least any four girls can become the Shaggs in a week. But compare it to Paul Green's Philadelphia-based School of Rock (documented in Rock School and allegedly ripped off for School of Rock) and well all the empowerment in the world won't even get you to level four in Guitar Hero. If Girls Rock! sees music as a means to an end Young@Heart sees it as an end in itself. Begun at a senior center in 1982 the Young@Heart Chorus (under the direction of Northampton Arts Council executive director Bob Cilman) has shifted from standards to rock songs. "Golden Years" and "Stayin' Alive" take on new meaning when sung by the elderly. You want empowerment? The film's opening number "Should I Stay or Should I Go" heralded with Malcolm McLarenesque graphics and declaimed by 92-year-old Eileen Hall a British woman who says the song is by a band named "Crash" would send Paul Green scurrying to a corner with his Zappa records. The chorus is seen learning six new songs for their next concert including Sonic Youth's tortuous "Schizophrenia.

Coachella festival sets the standard for host of imitators
Press-Enterprise – Apr 24, 2008
This year more than a dozen multiday festivals similar to Coachella which opens today at the Empire Polo Field will take place around the country. Multiday events including the Mile High Music Festival in Denver Outside Lands in San Francisco and Rothbury in Michigan will launch this summer. In addition other festivals have started within the past five years such as the Virgin Mobile Festival in Baltimore and the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. "There’s no question that Coachella was the father of all of them" said Steve Baltin a contributing editor for the AOL music site Spinner… ended its run in 1998 and Lilith Fair a concert featuring primarily female acts was in its final year. In 1999 Coachella launched in Indio over two days in October with about 25000 people in attendance to see Rage Against the Machine Tool and Beck. What set Coachella apart from other multiday festivals was how it took cues from European festivals bringing together a wide swath of musical genres from electronic music to DJs to alternative to heavy metal. Financial troubles kept the festival from being staged again until 2001 when it came back for a one-day show and it has continued its rise since. "The festival has tried to please its fans by doing such things as holding the price of bottled water at $2 since 1999 and offering a program by which attendees can exchange 10 empty bottles for recycling in return for a fresh bottle of water. " Baltin cited the little things Goldenvoice does such as offering free parking and this year setting up a free train from Los Angeles to Indio for campers. Baltin said such touches helped build the trust of the fans.
