They topped the hit parade for years but in my lifetime we’ve been told to panic about all kinds of things. Depending on who’s doing the math the average American civilian’s chances of being a victim of a terrorist attack are minuscule?about one in 9 million according to one estimate. According to the National Safety Council you have an equal if not greater chance of being struck and killed by lightning (6188298 to 1) or of being bitten to death by a dog (9089063 to 1). Yet the National Weather Service doesn’t make you leave your golf clubs at the door when it starts raining and the NSPCA doesn’t have color-coded threat levels for German shepherds. 1 | 2 | 3 | 4NEXT > Read 24 Comments and Post Your Own Next Story: Jo Bros.
Indie bands hype new albums at Theatre
Red and Black – Apr 17, 2008
“The New Pornographers’ full lineup includes eight members each with roots in various other musical projects and their experiences bring a wide range of dynamics to the band’s sound. Despite its suggestive-sounding band name Collins insists their music is entirely unrelated. “Our name is utterly meaningless really” he said. “We could be searing death metal or we could be Muzak and we’d still have about the same relationship to the word ‘pornographers. ‘”Collins said working with such a large group dilutes tension between members and allows for more freedom of expression. “It’s pretty smooth sailing actually” he said… Despite its suggestive-sounding band name Collins insists their music is entirely unrelated. “Our name is utterly meaningless really” he said. “We could be searing death metal or we could be Muzak and we’d still have about the same relationship to the word ‘pornographers. ‘”Collins said working with such a large group dilutes tension between members and allows for more freedom of expression. “It’s pretty smooth sailing actually” he said. “We used to have a lot more trouble with scheduling but now it’s all kind of working out better because we’re all sort of getting used to budgeting our time between this band and our other projects. “The New Pornographers’ unique chemistry has yielded four acclaimed studio albums.
Exploring Hank Williams’ family legacy
MSNBC – Apr 17, 2008
“The museum already had enough Williams artifacts in its collection that it could have done the exhibit without the family but Tate said it wouldn?t have been as personal. ?They were so incredibly candid and open and sweet with their memories and they talked openly about the alcoholism and the tragedy? she said. A lot of the items show that the Williams clan wasn?t all that different from other families in the 1950s and ?60s. They danced and goofed around in their living room and took pictures of their kids on Santa?s lap.

The mission continues stronger than ever. Conquer your fear and you’ll conquer life and death. Conquer is Soulfly’s sixth album and it continues the Soulfly sonic assault of stormy thrashy guitar riffs thunderous tribal-influenced percussion and an infusion of atypical world music conventions that Cavalera has built his hard-earned reputation on. The track listing for Conquer is as follows. In the time-honored Soulfly tradition the album concludes with a self-titled track. “Blood Fire War Hate” “Unleash”"Paranoia”"Warmageddon” “Enemy Ghost” “Rough” “Fall Of The Sycophants”"Doom”"Rot” “Touching The Void” “Soulfly VI” Soulfly march forward once again with Conquer and will hit the road in support of the album later this year.
Megadeth overcomes technical abominations at Gigantour show
Dallas Morning News – Apr 16, 2008
Mustaine’s aim to expose influential extreme-metal acts to American audiences via Gigantour is thriving thanks to sure-footed turns by two Scandinavian openers. The influential Swedish melodic-thrash quintet In Flames was steady but not demonstrative (that’s not the act’s forte anyhow) and it was plain that singer Anders Fridén’s age is affecting both his stamina and screechy on-or-off pipes. Much younger and flashier Finnish death metalers Children of Bodom – which just released the metal album of the year to date the inventive and unrelenting Blooddrunk –needed more rehearsal and smaller doses of elfin leader Alexi Laiho.

Christian Science Monitor – Apr 16, 2008
The Beamz software comes equipped with a range of musical genres ? from heavy metal to classical to bluegrass ? so that one can play just about anything short of a kazoo symphony. (For demonstration video do a YouTube search. ) The Beamz Music Performance System isn’t exactly the first electronic instrument that relies on invisible waves. The Theremin invented in 1919 and most famously utilized in recordings by The Beach Boys Led Zeppelin and Goldfrapp creates squealing and screeching sounds whenever a musician waves his hands near its antenna to modulate the frequency of emitted signals. Even in the right hands it can sound like an alien death cry. By contrast the Beamz instrument boasts that it doesn’t allow for any bum notes since everything is programmed to be in tune. The system which debuted this week retails for about $600 and is only available at The Sharper Image… ) The Beamz Music Performance System isn’t exactly the first electronic instrument that relies on invisible waves. best resemble their raw hard-rock music from the ?90s when Curiel unleashes a paroxysm of crunching fretwork in ?God Forbid? one of the hardest P. tracks to date let alone on the album. When Angels and Serpents Dance also succeeds in mostly relieving listeners from the faux-reggae vocals and instrumentation that have pervaded recent P.
