There’s deathcore and there’s a metalcore scene out there and it’s a complete trend. I don’t want anything to do with that. We just wanted to write the most crushing and technical death metal we could come up with and make little metalcore kids sh– their pants. A lofty goal to be sure — one Ruskin hopes the band will have no problem achieving both with their record and with their wildly unpredictable live sets. “With this record we wanted to show everybody that there’s an underground genre of death metal that needs to be heard more” he continued. “It requires 20 million times more talent [than most subgenres of metal]. It’s harder playing arpeggios and gnarly riffs than it is to just play two open notes on the E string.

From Lekman’s personal accounts of the city Night Falls sounds a lot safer and more interesting than night actually falling over Kortedala. The new musical syndrome of Stockholm meanwhile can either be traced back to the breakout success of Peter Bjorn & John or the Knife whose influence on Norway’s small-town supersound and local club scene can’t be masked. Sure there’s still death metal and there always will be but in 2008 the music scene in Scandinavia is defrosting nicely. Five Degrees of Peter Bjorn & JohnShout ut Louds: Björn Yttling produced the quintet’s stellar sophomore effort ur Ill Wills (Merge) a dreamy indie-pop record rich with evocative male-female exchanges and Cure-esque melodrama. The Impossible EP is due in April featuring remixes from Studio and Van Rivers & the Subliminal Kid. Bassist Ted Malmros also directed the animated video for PB&J’s “Young Folks. Peter Morén: ne-third of Peter Bjorn & John makes his solo debut with The Last Tycoon due April 8 on Quarterstick.

Aldous spreads message through eclectic sound
Youngstown Vindicator – Feb 22, 2008
Formed less than two years ago the rock quintet ? Christopher Steven Kochera (drums) Shane Smith (vocals) Christian Tremain Hardy (guitar) Matthew Westhead (guitar) and Steve Yohman (bass) ? combines elements of hardcore funk straight-up rock and experimental sounds to create its own style. ?We?re just trying to not keep it genre-specific and add different elements to keep it interesting musically? said Hardy who graduated from Chaney High School in 2005. ?A lot of hardcore bands and metal bands they either keep it hardcore or metal and there?s really no room for breathing. We just like a lot of other things along with the hardcore and metal element. ?We also have different types of effects to kind of throw people off. It?s weird there aren?t that many places around here for us to play because of the genre. And it?s just easier to play regionally or other places where it?s a lot more people and they?re more receptive… ?Yeah it makes us stand out and makes people notice you? Hardy said. ne local venue where Hardy acknowledges people have taken notice is The Cellar where Aldous is scheduled to return Saturday. Also on the bill are Gingerspitz Something To Shelter Death f A Dying Breed Six Shots Left. ?Whenever we play a show at The Cellar people are receptive and come out? Hardy said. ?And any hometown show for us is a good show. ?Hardy and his bandmates whose erstwhile groups include Valerie Drive and Via Transit hope to spread their music throughout the Midwest this summer. A debut EP is in the works and the band also bought a trailer to transport its gear.

Unfortunately for those of us stuck on the west side of the Atlantic that critically acclaimed follow-up wasn’t released domestically something Nettwerk is determined to rectify with the imminent ‘08 release of the record as well as a major US tour next month. So to whet our appetites Hukkelberg’s Norwegian prepresentation took a dozen or so of journos and music reps out to slo’s Propeller Studios for a quaint little showcase performance where she and her four bandmates squeezed into a tiny deathly quiet room with the rest of us for a gorgeous selections of songs from the new(ish) album. Whether it was the asthmatic wheeze of an accordion being pulled. the sustained chime of a Tibetan singing bowl the innocent strains of a toy piano or Hukkerlberg’s own tender voice it made for an extraordinary experience that only enhanced the quiet power of the record.
Big names in Seattle music: together at last
Seattle Times – Feb 22, 2008
• Should we call it Alan Ladd Riding or the Shane Company? Either way it would feature Shane Berry formerly with the Divorce; singer-songwriter Shane Tutmarc of Dolour and the Traveling Mercies (March 7 at the Vera Project); Hypatia Lake bass player Shane Browning; and busy multi-instrumentalist Shane Peck (March 12 at the Sunset with Laguna March 14 at the Mars Bar with I-9 and March 15 at Nectar with ’80s Invasion). • Sunny Day Real Estate alum Jeremy Enigk (now solo) Jeremy Hadley of Velella Velella (Wednesday at Nectar) and Jeramy Koepping of the synth-space band Voyager ne (March 29 at High Dive) would make a nice trio which we’ll call Surprise Left. (Pearl Jam anyone?)• The Shaving Cuts would be heavy on bass players with Nick Wiggins of Aiden (on tour as usual) Nick Harmer of Death Cab for Cutie (new album “Narrow Stairs” coming soon) and Nick Heliotis of the Red Sea Sharks. Add in Nicholas Peterson drummer of new Sub Pop signing Fleet Foxes and singer-guitarist Steve E. Nix from the Briefs and Cute Lepers. • What should we call a band with now-retired bass player Kim Warnick (the Fastbacks Visqueen) singer Kim Archer (tonight at Poppa’s Pub in Kent) in-demand bass player Kimberly Morrison (Unnatural Helpers the Hacks the Dutchess & the Duke) and exceptional new Mono in VCF singer Kim Miller? With a nod to the Green Pajamas let’s go with the Waitress. • Lake Timber: Argo singer-guitarist Justin Benson; Justin Harcus bass player of sassy pop-punk band the Catch; Justin Wilmore who plays bass in Aqueduct; and Justin Cronk of Lonesome Rhodes & the Good Company (Tuesday at the Triple Door)… • Hip-hoppers are a little more elusive as they often come up with their own singular names. • Last and probably least somebody round up a jam band featuring Jason Holstrom of United State of Electronica (March 15 at the Paramount); Jason Palaniuk from hard rockers Skullbot; Jason Bazinet of the experimental-metal band SMP (March 15 at El Corazon); Mono in VCF’s Jason Falk; out-there singer-songwriter Jason Webley (Saturday at Estradasphere Studios in Ballard); and Jason Milne and Jason Atkin both of the Purrs (Tuesday at Chop Suey). This band of Jasons? I’d call them The Slashers. Tom Scanlon: tscanlon@seattletimes.com Copyright © 2008 The Seattle Times Company More Music & nightlife headlines.
