Twelve Kansas City bands share their thoughts on Armageddon before…
Pitch Weekly – Feb 21, 2008
The Resident Evil trilogy suggests that ut of the Suffering bassist Krista Julius might be the one who rises above her brethren to become the zombie-slaying hero of a ravaged land. “I am prepared to lead my fellow brothers and sisters to safety to ensure the survival of mankind and metal for all eternity” she says. “Eat your heart out Xena!”Severend creates crushing death-metal songs with titles such as “To Watch the Sky Burn” but when faced with the prospect of an actual fiery horizon guitarist Collin Kitzerow becomes philosophical and optimistic. “A key to surviving in a post-apocalyptic world will be mobility” he says. “Those who are able to move freely and live off the land will survive. Touring bands would thus lead the charge into an unknown future. The music in this era will ask how a loving God could allow such a catastrophe… Touring bands would thus lead the charge into an unknown future. The music in this era will ask how a loving God could allow such a catastrophe. Metal music will become an outlet for the masses whose lives have been destroyed by the disaster. The messages sent by metal bands will either unite our society as a whole or plunge it deeper into the endless cascade of suffering disease and false hopes. In this barbaric environment metal will provide a new release of energy a new sense of security and a new tool for social change. Whatever happens Godzai guitarist T-Rez wants his group in the middle of the chaos. “If I had it my way Godzai would be throwing the biggest concert of all time as the bombs are flying” he says.

When business was slow we had nothing better to do than sit around in the back of the store talking meaningless nothings to pass the time. That was when I met Donovan a 6-foot-5-inch giant with tattoos scrawled across his arms and gauge earrings the size of pepperonis. n a particularly slow evening I asked him what type of music he listened to. He responded “Death metal. ” I was blown away. With all the different types of great music available today I couldn’t imagine someone restricting himself to one particular style for his entire life.

Middle East metal fans fight for right to rock

gif’> printMiddle East metal fans fight for right to rockBy John LucasIf you think the people around you don?t quite get your taste in music just be glad you?re not a heavy-metal freak in Morocco. In 2003 14 Casablanca metalheads musicians and fans were jailed for disturbing the public order and for possessing CDs and T-shirts that were supposedly anti-Islamic. For many westerners the surprising part of this story is not that the rockers? tastes were considered subversive by their elders (that scenario should be familiar to anyone who has ever been a teenager) but that Morocco has a thriving heavy-metal scene. According to Mark LeVine a history professor at the University of California at Irvine the Muslim-majority countries of the Middle East and North Africa are full of such underground cultural movements which go against western perceptions of the region. LeVine has spent much of the past 15 years travelling in the Middle East… It?s a topic that the author himself a guitarist of some note was inevitably drawn to and one that he deals with extensively in his forthcoming book Heavy Metal Islam: Rock Resistance and the Struggle for the Soul of Islam. ?As a musician I would just naturally start running into musicians and artists and I started discovering this whole scene of rock music all over the Muslim world that just blew my mind because it totally broke down all these barriers that one would imagine separate us from them? he said reached at home via telephone. ?To see death metal being played by religious Muslims in Cairo just doesn?t make sense even to me. And the most important thing was that in starting to follow these scenes and travelling to places?whether it was Iraq or Iran or Pakistan or even the North-West Frontier Province [of Pakistan] which is the home of the Taliban?you see that people are much more alike than we tend to think or even want to admit. ? Not that being a Middle Eastern metalhead is easy. In fact it?s often seen as a rebellion against the very foundations of society. This is where heavy metal?s long and proudly upheld reputation as the devil?s music becomes problematic.

I wanted this to have great bands that I actually like and a well-rounded group of artists who do all styles of tattoos from traditional and Japanese to Polynesian and American styles. ” Von D sat down with several of her friends and started to plan out how to execute her vision for the festival. With the help of a friend who had connections in the music industry she made a wish list of bands she wanted to perform. “I’m so happy with the lineup” Von D said. “I love the Used and Tiger Army and it’s so cool that they’re going to be there. riginally Turbonegro and Eagles of Death Metal were going to play on Sunday but Eagles had a recording scheduling conflict and Turbonegro lost its guitarist so they went on hiatus and those are two of my favorite bands so I was a little bummed that they couldn’t make it. ” During the three-day event there will be hundreds of tattoo artists showcasing their work and doing on-the-spot tattooing… “I’m so happy with the lineup” Von D said. ” During the three-day event there will be hundreds of tattoo artists showcasing their work and doing on-the-spot tattooing. Various vendors will also be selling tattoo related items including clothing and accessories. Artists will be doing demonstrations throughout the event and there are even some small classes and seminars planned with some of the industry’s best tattooers.
