Metalocalypse Takes an Adult Swim in Blood
SF Weekly – Oct 10, 2007
As with Hee-Haw’s Kornfield Kounty gang it’s hard not to have a favorite member of the Dethklok crew. An all-powerful band of fierce metal warriors Dethklok is led by singer Nathan Explosion a burly fellow who howls grunts and converses in the Cookie Monster–speak favored by death-metal vocalists. The band’s two Scandinavian guitarists are Skwisgaar Skwigelf the agile lead who is also a member of the nude Civil War–themed Depantsification Proclamation and Toki Wartooth whose Barney-like innocence has inspired adoration by children the world over… In this way the underground world of extreme metal collides ridiculously with consumer banality. f course not every death-metaler will find Metalocalypse funny. The show mocks a style of music that almost never laughs at itself. (Humor is very threatening to death metal’s gloomy carcass-strewn landscape. ) However rockers with a sense of irony have embraced the show leaving comments on Dethklok’s MySpace page like “If only the real world was as metal as the one you guys have created. ” Even icons like King Diamond James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett of Metallica and George “Corpse-grinder” Fisher of Cannibal Corpse have all given their approval in the form of being guest voices on the show. And the franchise has recently spawned limited-edition action figures of Deth-klok a DVD of the first season and The Dethalbum which features music written and performed by Brendon Small.

” Arden added that his sister needed the heavy-metal icon to keep working “because of her exorbitant spending. In response zzy said that Sharon “does not get involved in telling me about working” and that he tried retirement once and “it sucked. ” zzy added “My wife can’t make me do anything I don’t want to do” and he thinks Arden “needs to see a f—ing psychiatrist. sbourne did not discuss whether 2008′s zzfest would once again be free for fans… As long as I’m not doing bullsh–. zzy was also asked whether he’ll be participating in director Peter Margolis’ upcoming documentary about late guitarist Randy Rhoads who died at age 25 in a 1982 plane crash. sbourne said he won’t be but added that he has flowers delivered to Rhoads’ grave every year on the anniversary of his death. He also rejected the possibility that he’ll one day pen an autobiography saying his memory is not what it once was.

She calls their latest Get the Gore “the perfect representation of the concept the idea the style of the band. ” They’re like Amy Winehouse without you know the obnoxiously public drug addiction — or better yet the Stooges trying to cover the Ronettes. “I think it’s seen as a gimmick more than anything” she concedes when pressed about how the music industry and even pop culture views an all-girl band that insists on wearing costumes. “My idea was to create a band that looked a certain way and sounded a certain way. They’re our characters; it’s who we play. It’s like a three-dimensional art. Nor could she really imagine taking the stage without the short dresses and shiny boots… Gore insists that the only real bias the band contends with is that a lot of people just can’t seem to get past the stage antics and take them more seriously as artists. “I think there are way more novelty acts out there now based on humor — like all these joke bands” Gore contends. “Like death metal is a parody. They’re making a joke out of rock ‘n’ roll singing about girls and getting drunk. To me most rock ‘n’ roll has become a parody of itself. Although they might not recognize it the Gore Gore Girls offer up a bit of parody too albeit of the self-conscious not-annoyingly-ridiculous sort. But beyond the gimmick of their personas they do produce some genuinely great rock ‘n’ roll.
