CD Review: Lift the Curse that is Freya

That moniker must make them feel pretty badass huh? That much is obvious in the way they somehow keep from letting in an inch of charisma on the entire record. No they must maintain a steely angry woe-is-me the-world-is-going-to-hell attitude throughout every monotonous headache-inducing song. Some have labeled Lift the Curse a future classic but the only thing memorable about Freya’s music is how incredibly awful it is. Lead “singer” Karl Buechner screams like some sort of twisted dying monster with a nasal allergy. The lyrics he “sings” are barely intelligible most of the time over the forced growling that is his voice. While the loud obnoxious band may have some redeeming talents (as a few of their riffs suggest) it’s hardly evident in the repetitive nature of their music a feature that only manages to highlight the horror that is Buechner’s voice. Each song is barely distinguishable from its predecessor but what is obvious is how incredibly tedious it is to try to listen to the whole album through even once… While the loud obnoxious band may have some redeeming talents (as a few of their riffs suggest) it’s hardly evident in the repetitive nature of their music a feature that only manages to highlight the horror that is Buechner’s voice. Each song is barely distinguishable from its predecessor but what is obvious is how incredibly tedious it is to try to listen to the whole album through even once. Freya tries so hard to be edgy when really all they’re producing is overplayed cliché-ridden death metal. But that should have been expected from one look at the CD jacket. Black grey and a few splotches of red dominate the front cover an overly-graphic picture of some almost skeletal-looking cavemen fighting each other with one about to bash the other’s skull in. The back is a very similar picture of what looks like soldiers fighting again with one about to bash the other’s skull in. I wonder if they were trying to be symbolic to show that they’re you know deep.

As I Lay Dying clearly have more than a few gasps left — the metal band edged out Switchfoot Jason Mraz and others to win the San Diego Music Award for Artist of the Year. AILD nabbed the same honor in 2005.

Dave Grohl: The Ear Candy interview

I usually start demoing songs at home in my basement on an eight-track or a ProTools system the same way I did 10 years ago. Then I bring them t o the guys who are a great barometer for what’s good and what’s not. I write tons and tons of music and then we get together to start performing it rehearsing it and arranging it and start knocking it into shape. I really trust those guys’ opinions and their tastes as far as what songs are worth it and what songs aren’t. Sometimes things can get a little cloudy in that areas. Sometimes I am in love with an instrumental and everyone else thinks it sucks. (Laughs) So yeah I have a band of really amazingly talented people who grab hold of their corner of a song and pull it in their direction and usually it makes the songs sound bigger and better and broader… Then I realized that I have to be in a rock band. I can’t be in an acoustic alt-country band. And so then I started writing for as rock record with all these acoustic songs left over. A lot of the acoustic songs on the album are older. Some of them are 15 years old some of them are 10 years old some of them are seven years old.
