It’s not a question of ‘Do I want to play this kind of music?’ because I still totally love metal. I would love to do it. And the stars seem to be aligning already according to Amott who said the ex-members of Carcass did hook up last year to rehearse. “We thought ‘Let’s just try to get our schedules together jam a little bit and see if it’s even feasible’ ” he said. “The question always comes up in interviews and we kind of all became intrigued ourselves if it would actually work… Dates are scheduled through ctober 21 in San Diego and Apiary will open on the trek. In late ctober the Pyre will finish writing and recording their new album tentatively scheduled for release in mid-2008.

Different musical background? Well both yes and no. Pete and I are probably the biggest metalheads among the four of us with a great interest in classic metal thrash metal but also death and black metal. Bosse is very much into brutal death metal and stuff like Isis Neurosis and Rotten Sound. Dor is probably the rock ‘n roll guy among us but he is also into different kinds of metal. A slightly diverse interest in music is nothing but good and healthy for the band. We are in the process of getting down new material and it is great to see how the material has evolved since last time. PR: What kind of thinking went in to the album title? Were you trying to make some kind of statement with it? r just crazy about being blunt? Faust: Well some people were slightly provoked by the title but I don’t understand why… Bosse is very much into brutal death metal and stuff like Isis Neurosis and Rotten Sound. Seems like they thought we were trying to define a whole genre which of course we weren’t. I mean it is just an album title.

Its title promises little but this big-hearted documentary delivers much. Beginning as a misguided if not utterly foolhardy travelogue – risking one’s life in the world’s most dangerous city to track down an amateur music group – it segues into a potent exploration of the meaning and fragility of intellectual freedom and the value of music as a safety valve for youthful rebellion. The anti-fan of metal music scoffs at his peril: the young men depicted in this film are on the front line in the war for freedom of speech. A world premiere at Toronto the film is sure to entice a smaller independent distributor. Its strong youth appeal – abetted by the mordant onscreen presence of co-director Alvi – and the universality of its underlying message should lead to a limited theatrical run. It gives heft to the head-banger chant: for those about to rock we salute you. The title is at once intuitive and counter-intuitive… It is hard to imagine a more lucid and candid observer of a society’s disintegration. He makes the danger of his participation plain: anyone heard speaking English or in the company of Westerners on the street is subject to immediate execution. Even his heavy-metal themed t-shirt marks him for death. He travels with the filmmakers to explore the band’s old haunts. We see that their practice studio and instruments were destroyed by a US missile while the hotel where they played their gig is now a no-go zone. He also expresses his anger over the invasion his frustration with the perception of Iraq as a land of fundamentalist zealots and talks of his daily fears. And yet he must tow the line and abandon his metal-head facial hair for the beard demanded by ideologues.
Baghdad band on the run
Guardian Unlimited – Sep 28, 2007
” Unbreakable it may be but in a country where wearing a Slipknot T-shirt is akin to Satanism and headbanging is suspected of mimicking the Jewish act of prayer making heavy metal music is either extremely daft or extremely brave. That is why Acrassicauda’s members – Firas Al-Taleef Tony Aziz Marwan Riyak and Faisal Talal – have to write blog in “purgatory” otherwise known as in exile in Damascus though their MySpace page reports that their Syrian visas expire on ctober 10 and will not be renewed. Unless they can raise the money to move somewhere else they will have to return to Baghdad. It’s fitting then that the documentary Heavy Metal in Baghdad – which premiered this month at the Toronto film festival – begins with the band’s last live performance in Iraq in 2003 one of only three shows they were able to play… The documentary which was shot over three years shows the band’s determination to make music despite a series of logistical and life-threatening obstacles. In one scene the band are shown setting up for what proves to be their last show in Baghdad when a fan asks: “Is it safe? No one’s going to blow us up?” The band respond: “We hope not. ” But it’s not just the threat of death from a range of sources (Scud missiles insurgents with a distaste for Metallica covers) that stands in Acrassicauda’s way. Impromptu roadblocks power cuts and a 9pm curfew all make playing live a nightmare. Heavy Metal in Baghdad was inspired by a 2003 article about Acrassicauda that featured in Vice magazine. The band made for instantly recognisable heroes: five testosterone-fuelled but otherwise mild-mannered young men with a love of Slayer Iron Maiden and Megadeth. But what started off as a project to help Acrassicauda achieve their goal of playing live soon turned into something else entirely as Iraq descended into civil war.

(Hide copyright information) Byline: Nick Whitfield nwhitfield@@dailyherald. com Elgin’s Gail Borden Public Library may have to relax its rules Sunday when it hosts loud music and messy food during a battle of the bands. Six bands with styles ranging from acoustic rock to death metal will compete for bragging rights and a year’s supply of burritos in a contest that’s a first for the library. “It was really a chance to connect with kids in a different way” library Director of Marketing Denise Raleigh said. “We hope they’ll come to see the bands and stay to see what else the library has to offer. ” The battle also is a chance for young area musicians to find a local audience.
