The Gauntlet – Aug 7, 2007
He glowered at the audience leaned into our faces and at one point wrapped the microphone cord around his neck like a noose. An overused and rather childish gesture but it suits the band’s style of blunt anger. I’d heard the single of theirs ‘vum’ which many have called one of their few truly death metal songs and after listening to the rest of their set I found myself in agreement. Daath have plenty of talent particularly in the vocal department but their songwriting leans a little too often on chugging pit anthems despite their best efforts and backing keys. Daath are just too familiar. If they can develop the vocal interplay between Sean and the surprisingly powerful voice of keyboardist Mike Kameron and make the best of Kevin Talley’s ‘veteran’ presence on the drums Daath may be able to break the mold so to speak but at present they are just too familiar. The rest of the band weren’t quite as malevolent as Sean and on the contrary seemed to be having fun with the crowd instead of haranguing them.

Black Tide a young metal band from Miami that had been tapped to replace Circus Diablo on zzfest’s second stage have now found themselves having to drop off the bill — without even playing a single note. As it turns out the band is too young — the second stage is being sponsored by Jägermeister and the group’s youngest member is only 14 years old… music retailers are yanking import copies of Amy Winehouse’s 2003 debut Frank from their shelves after receiving a letter from Universal Republic that threatens legal action and claims the label has exclusive rights to distribute her recordings Stateside. The label is planning to issue the album domestically for the first time November 7.

Yet while the death rattle of nu-metal rings here Israeli nu-metal is vibrant and healthy. Contrasted to the vulgar jejune hedonism of American nu-metal Israeli nu-metal has a decidedly humanistic tinge… Seek Irony?s music is often standard nu-metal fare. The single ?Tech?N?Roll? features masculine posturing and vague absurd declarations about the power of rock ?n? roll: ?Tech and Roll expands your mind and saves your soul. ? Their recent single ?Everything We Are? though is both a musical accomplishment for the band (thumping without being ridiculous moving without recycling vague tropes) and a surprisingly political one. The song is a collaboration between the Israeli group and Rabih Zogheib the lead singer of Blood Ink ? a Lebanese metal band. The two bands met immediately before the Lebanon War in 2006 and kept up a correspondence during the violence.
