There are occasional silences but I’m starting to understand the Finns a lot better. It’s not that they are shy quiet and reserved; they just think a lot before speaking. Antti tells me that the two most popular forms of music in Finland are death metal (as caricatured by Lordi Finland’s winners of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest and no nobody here takes them seriously either) and tango but the flyers in the window of Digelius allude to a much less bi-polar nightlife which my next sherpa will be taking care of. Martti has the night shift and walks me down Fredrikinkatu one of Punavuori’s main arteries as the midsummer sunlight twinkles on rows of townhouses. We go for a beer in Loose (Fredrikinkatu 34) where velveteen red walls stencilled artwork and mounted pictures of Iggy Pop suggest musical tastes that stretch beyond death metal. In Bar Moskva (Eerikinkatu 11) the interior seems to have been transplanted from 1980s Moscow with an ancient radio dominating the back bar and pastel-coloured geometric shapes slapped on panels protruding from the wall; the punters’ retro garb mirrored the setting. With the sun reluctant to set despite it being close to midnight I retire to my hotel reflecting on the day.

The Gipsy Kings did it with “Hotel California” and Rodrigo y Gabriela’s repertory includes a lush “Stairway to Heaven. ” Vietnam’s slow-burning guitars and dissolute muttering vocals are the sound of the party long after everyone but one strung-out character has left.

GasMoney Conquers – Again

First up was Milwaukee Wisconsin native Eric Blowtorch or Eric Blowtorch and The Welders Eric Blowtorch & the Inflammables Superpowers in Dub and Mighty Django Hi-Fi. Here on a mission of mercy as such – he spent time at the Alpha Boys’ School which he exaggerated (only a little) as being the place where half of the island’s musicians went to school as his idea of a tribute to the island and its cultural contributions to the rest of the world – he was on his way back after helping to organise the school’s music library. Fronted by GasMoney drummer Akiri Cooper the band also consists of Hamilton ‘Nemesis’ Brown on lead guitar and Conway ‘Ceejay’ Baker on drums – the bass player for some unknown reason was absent. This was the band’s first live performance having formed just last year and they acquitted themselves well… Should he add a little more variation the sky is the limit. Ceejay was very good on the drums – especially in the absence of a bass player keeping it all grounded but not afraid to let it rip every now and then. With the original numbers No Love Writings of the Murders and Death Decree Anthirium seems to be coming along quite nicely. Next up was Petrus – and they were without a lead guitarist normally a large part of their sound. Lead singer Petrus did have an acoustic guitar strapped around his neck but the ensemble reworked their sound to centre around Joel Ashbourne’s keyboard skills – and it worked. With Craig ‘Phlee’ Lee on drums and John Fenton on bass the trio went through a number of exhilarating originals – For Your Love and For Carmen before thrilling with their radical take on the National Anthem. At one Chang left the stage ascended to the second tier of the caf?climbed onto a railing and looked ready to attempt a swan dive and some crowd surfing before realising that no one on the ground floor had a clue what to expect or do – so he opted (wisely) out of causing himself grievous bodily harm.
