Hair metal didn’t appeal to me when I was a tyke in the ’80s. I dug Guns ‘N Roses but never Metallica and for modern incarnations of metal I prefer bands like Dillinger Escape Plan (whose complex mathematical playing blows my mind) to death metal like Beck’s newest band Reign of Vengeance. Most of it just bores me. Lately I’ve heard some demos and songs online by locals that I dug a lot so recently I ventured out to a five-band show in Phoenix and discovered a metal underground that’s exciting and compelling. It’s a new developing scene with the bands doing non-linear takes on the evolution of metal. Before I went to the show which was at the Casa Blanca Lounge on Van Buren Street I recruited a friend with a far broader knowledge of underground metal than me a local musician named Sassy Britches.

Rams’ annual competition far from typical
St. Petersburg Times – May 24, 2007
Junior Ryan Nye who was attending his third competition said the event isn't as much about bodybuilding as it is about the students getting together one last time before the seniors graduate. The Class of 2007 was done Wednesday and the rest of the school finishes Friday. "Not everyone is into death metal but it brings the kids that are here " said J. Baker life coach and coordinator of the event. "The dance team comes with their families all the contestants and their families. I have kids in the back of my classes that don't want to be a part of anything and this event brings them here… Some were also there to see the arm-wrestling match between science teacher and former WCW wrestler Dean Liptak and football coach Brian Wachtel. The arm-wrestling match took place halfway through the event and was nothing short of a reincarnation of a pro wrestling bout. With theme music prefight banter drama and no clear winner it was all there for anyone who remembers watching a match as a kid. As for the competition itself the 6-foot trophy and title of Mr. Ridgewood went to Barry Johansonbaugh while weightlifting champ Meghan Seltman was crownd Miss Ridgewood. Seltman female athlete of the year at Ridgewood and a member of the its hall of fame was one of only seven girls to compete. "I wish I would have had more girls this year but you know they don't feel comfortable and I understand " Baker said.

Having only one hand no bar to guitar
Norwich Evening News – May 24, 2007
The vocalist and bass guitar player for death metal band Belial has developed a novel way of dealing with inquiries about the lack of his left hand – he tells people he lost it to a crazed axeman. The 19-year-old was born without his hand but has not his disability stand in the way of doing whatever he wants to do from martial arts to playing in the band which is performing at the Marquee in Cattle Market Street tomorrow. ?Sometimes I make stories up about my hand to make it seem a little bit more exciting than ‘I was born this way’. I’ve told people I was chased by a man with an axe and all sorts of things? he said. ?The meanest explanation I’ve ever given was when I was working on a fish counter… I try to look at what I can do rather than what I can’t. I have never let it hold me back in any way. ?Ü The Access to Music showcase will be at the Marquee Cattle Market Street tomorrow at 7. Entry is free over-18s only.

Dual vocalists proved ideal for Lacuna Coil
Georgia Straight – May 24, 2007
‘ In the end we found the right formula for our band. “In its formative days in the late 1990s Lacuna Coil–which has so far released two EPs and four CDs including its latest full-length offering Karmacode–played up the goth angle that has paid dividends for bands like Evanescence. But according to Migliore the group’s death-doom aspect has diminished over time. “When we started it was nearly 10 years ago” says Migliore “and of course we were listening to [darker] bands like the Gathering and Paradise Lost. So obviously it influenced our music but I wouldn’t call us gothic-metal or anything like that anymore. “Karmacode is actually more prog-metal than anything else; its intense yet melodic vibe recalls Queensrÿche’s adventurous peration: Mindcrime. “We learned to improve our songwriting throughout the years” says Migliore… But according to Migliore the group’s death-doom aspect has diminished over time. “When we started it was nearly 10 years ago” says Migliore “and of course we were listening to [darker] bands like the Gathering and Paradise Lost. But it’s also as you say accessible because of the way we write.

” Slagel the man known for releasing the first recordings by Metallica in 1982 and signing Slayer the very next year welcomed JB FR A CWBY to his label’s roster in 2006. JB FR A CWBY has met to a landslide of enthusiastic fan and critical acclaim in the time leading up to the release of “GENESIS”. The quintet (vocalist Jonny Davy guitarists Ravi Bhadriraju and Bobby Thompson bassist Brent Riggs and drummer Jon “The Charn” Rice) has been tagged as metal’s “next big thing” by Guitar World while “GENESIS” is being hailed as “an album that quite literally obliterates everyone else currently residing within the death and grind [metal] scenes” and “one of the year’s most essential metal purchases. ” by the UK’s Kerrang! who presented “GENESIS” with it’s coveted 5KKKKK perfect rating. The first music video from “GENESIS” — for the album’s roll out track “Embedded” — made its world network premiere as part of MTV2’s long-running “Headbangers Ball” program. The eye-opening “Embedded” video was directed by Popcore and provides the perfect visual accompaniment to the band’s advanced aural assault. In alignment with the quasi-conceptual theme(s) of “GENESIS” the impelling “Embedded” clip details the events surrounding the ‘Verichip’ a RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) implant that some say is close to turning from eerie idea to full-blown reality… The quintet (vocalist Jonny Davy guitarists Ravi Bhadriraju and Bobby Thompson bassist Brent Riggs and drummer Jon “The Charn” Rice) has been tagged as metal’s “next big thing” by Guitar World while “GENESIS” is being hailed as “an album that quite literally obliterates everyone else currently residing within the death and grind [metal] scenes” and “one of the year’s most essential metal purchases. ” by the UK’s Kerrang! who presented “GENESIS” with it’s coveted 5KKKKK perfect rating.
