“We’ll play a Sly Stone cover and the next song they’re dancing to is ‘Los [rapper Carlos Young] spitting about how much he hates radio hip-hop. Liqd sound like Arrested Development 10 years on and 10 times better drawling P-Funky R&B under ornery rapping and Creamsicles-for-the-ears vocals. “We admitted early on we liked pop music” Woods says himself a veteran of people-pleasing cover bands playing C surf ‘n’ suds joints. That’s where he met Young in the late ’90s. Young’s nasally topspin rhyming is heavily influenced by Q-Tip and Chuck D and he sounds as angry as those revered MCs. n “America’s Bitch” from Liqd’s Audiopleasure disc he surmises the state of being black in America and concludes “Guess I’m a nigger” sounding down but not out. To fill out Liqdzunshine’s lineup Young brought in drummer Dave “P-45″ Sussman bassist Dave Staples Mike Cleveland on woodwinds and dreadlocked chanteuse Denean Dyson a Cal State Fullerton student who joined four years ago… To fill out Liqdzunshine’s lineup Young brought in drummer Dave “P-45″ Sussman bassist Dave Staples Mike Cleveland on woodwinds and dreadlocked chanteuse Denean Dyson a Cal State Fullerton student who joined four years ago. Woods got the oddly spelled name from P-Funk’s Motor Booty Affair. It’s hard not to like these hip-hop ambassadors who hold their own on bills with death-metal bands and thug rappers but do it without dumbing anything down. Woods had a label deal through Sublime’s Gasoline Alley Universal imprint back in the day and lived to tell about it. “Typical story of people who know nothing about music trying to tell me how to make a record” he says. So for now they do their own thing and are finishing Beautiful Things with producer Evan Frankfurt who also produced Audiopleasure’s hazy greatness. “We’re inspired by Beck and Radiohead because they’re both artists with incredible production” says Woods.

jpg” >As the lights dimmed in front of the stage at JB’s Bar and Grill on Saturday April 14 the audience settled in to watch the first band of the evening Colors You Can’t See start their set. But before the music started a group of college students stepped onto the stage and announced that the money collected tonight would be going to the Crisis Resource Center of Pittsburg an organization dedicated to helping victims of abuse. The concert which featured three bands was a benefit event organized by Women’s Studies student Michaela Phillips. “This was an activism project for my Women’s Studies class” Phillips a senior in geography said. “I thought a concert would be something everyone could enjoy and it would go to a good cause. Phillips worked with a group of five other students: Michael Todd Kristen Pauley Kala Scott Sabrina Scholes and Riley Rosenhagen… Benefits give us a greater cause and gives the music more meaning. King says he wants to break conventions about hardcore bands by involving his group in more fund-raising shows. “Most people don’t think of metal bands being associated with benefits but we like to just get out there and play for a good cause” King said. “We’ll even play for free if we have to. Because I Could Not Stop for Death’s next show will be Saturday April 21 at at Foxtown City Limits in Mulberry. The last band to play Saturday night was the Noise FM. Lead singer Alex Ward said the band got a call from Phillips after playing a benefit concert for the Colonial Fox Foundation.
Ghost Stories: Masaki Batoh on Life Death and Stormy Nights

Important matters—for example Sudan Niger Somalia North Korea the Middle East wars led by a crazy American hero—are reflected through our mind filters. But understand that this album is not a political one at all. I’d like to put an opinion that music could be a symbol of this world’s thanatology. ” (Thanatology means study of death. )Conceived in the mid-1980s Ghost has continually evolved with members coming and going. Founding member Taishi Takizawa who returned after a ten-year absence to play on Hypnotic Underworld again makes an appearance playing saxophone flute vibraphone and theremin.

Couldn’t ask for better week — for things musical that is
MaineToday.com – Apr 19, 2007
I’ll begin my weekly rant of musical glory in about two sentences. I just want to humbly request that we send some seriously positive vibes of peace and healing to Virginia Tech. Dominique Lise finally took her day job and shoved it and is now as they say doing the music thing full time. She’s been a busy bee these past several months putting the finishing touches on her “Twenty Years” record while also working with an artist management company and a promotions one. As of Wednesday 350 radio stations here and in Canada have been sent copies of the CD. Take a few minutes and go to her Web site www… Well what can I say? I am totally smiling and quietly cracking up. See the thing is I put the CD in before reading a single word about the band which is always a fun approach. It’s also made me get over myself and my petty woes. Track one and I’m not making this up is called “Deth Kult Social Club. ” For its genre it’s spot on terrific.
