The band obviously agreed hiring Rice. What he lacked in experience he more than made up for in knowledge. Rice had been steeped by his father Louis in metal music from the hair bands to hardcore. At Bethel Park High School he’d participated in symphonic and jazz band. Rice had the knowledge but had to apply it. Whatever their differences all were united by impatience and opening act King Ly Chee paid the price. While they got some generous applause and the guys in the mosh pit did the requisite amount of jumping and crowd-surfing they chanted “NFX NFX” almost every time the hardcore Hong Kong band was between numbers. It didn’t help that their brand of trash-death metal delivered in a near-Linkin Park style and lead vocalist G’s single-key shouting came across as a noise-fest. Here’s a hint guys: Even Johnny Rotten’s signature snarl had a certain cadence to it. Despite the band trying to connect with the audience with founder Riz Farooqi making repeated declarations on the unity of Asia and with songs such as Unite Asia and My Family it was obvious it was a lost cause. So it was no surprise when the second opening act the local masked punk-pop trio Y2K was cancelled with the show organiser FYI Entertainment (www.
