Mood is black for regulars at Goth pub

If you’re into that sort of thing you’ll certainly be happy here. They take their music seriously here but it encompasses a pretty wide spectrum considering; you might hear anything from early MD Goth stalwarts Bauhaus or some Norwegian Death Metal. All of this suits the regulars – of which there are many – as well as the Goth tourists who come here to sit nervously eyeing everyone. A bunch of older locals also drink here during the day which can add a quaint touch of banality to the doom-laden atmosphere but their presence has been diminishing over the years. ne for alternative types there’s a door policy in the evening to prevent ‘the blue jeans and trainer brigade’ diluting the atmosphere which is incidentally pretty relaxed and friendly. Wearing black is the easiest way to gain entry but also expect a few extravagant types – we’ve seen plenty of velvet lace and Victoriana as well as someone in full equestrian attire – breeches an’ all… If you’re into that sort of thing you’ll certainly be happy here. Birthday thoughts on the road to Thika

A tree its roots weakened by the flash flood toppled over on to the Thika Road a main artery linking a handful of slums with the city centre. nce the Thika Road was blocked there weren’t many alternatives to try (Nairobi has never been strong on city planning). Unable to move either forwards or backwards trapped in a metal caterpillar of buses cars and matatus – Nairobi’s signature taxi buses – we sat waiting for something – anything – to shift. After the first hour I had moved from fretful exasperation to placid resignation. Joseph my driver had switched off the engine and turned up the music: Bob Marley champion of the downtrodden. There was no point getting angry. I was obviously not going to reach my friends in anything approaching time… Unable to move either forwards or backwards trapped in a metal caterpillar of buses cars and matatus – Nairobi’s signature taxi buses – we sat waiting for something – anything – to shift. There was no point getting angry. I was obviously not going to reach my friends in anything approaching time. It was certainly going to be one of those anniversaries one remembered just not in quite the way intended. ut of the fume-filled darkness (Nairobi has never been strong on street lights) the first walkers began to emerge.
