Shock awe? Band names are a lot like brand names
Seattle Times – Mar 19, 2007
Then we do movies with Charlie Sheen. T Experience: Even when listening to their fine music I can’t get the Mr. T line from “Rocky III” out of my head. “My prediction? Pain… Queens of the Stone Age: Named after an insult about them. Space Monkey: Peter Tork astronaut. The Flaming Lips: Why even speculate?Somebody somewhere is offendedThe Dead Kennedys: ne of the few names that got your attention like a good slap in the face. Brian Jonestown Massacre: This would be another one. Suicidal Tendencies: Underrated name underrated band. Dead Milkmen: Surprisingly the Milkmen’s union never said a word. The Sex Pistols: And they never earned an audience with the Queen.

New York Times – Mar 19, 2007
Many bands played multiple shows sometimes two or three in an afternoon like the Fratellis a hearty Scottish trio who when I saw them strummed acoustic guitars and sang deft catchy 1960s-flavored songs about romantic ups and downs. There were also hundreds of bands that had scraped together gas money packed up vans and driven hundreds of miles to play for 40 minutes to clubs half full of people already considering the next set. And there was music for virtually every taste: doomy heavy metal (Zoroaster Boris) supple Brazilian pop (Tita Lima) brutally innovative electronica (Amon Tobin) or charmingly nerdy indie-rock (Menomena). While many of the bands were new or relatively new with a handful of albums on small labels much of the music deliberately looked back. The Black Angels from Austin revived not only a Velvet Underground song title (“The Black Angel’s Death Song”) but also the measured pace ritualistic intensity and seething guitar of the Velvet Underground’s drones coupled with ominous incantations with echoes of Jim Morrison. Mid Columbia Tri City Herald – Mar 19, 2007
Death metal band Mortal Remains took home the coveted $1000 grand prize at the second annual Battle of the Bands. In addition to $1000 cash up-front they get to lay down studio tracks at Sound 10 Studios in Kennewick. A sweet victory after not even placing at last year’s Battle. Better ff Naked placed second receiving a $250 runner-up cash prize as well as some studio time while To Save the Sound placed third also receiving $250 but no recording time. The local bands were rated on their performance crowd reaction style and stage presence said the Toyota Arena Manager Lance Waddell… However that didn’t stop the teenage girls from wearing low-cut tank tops or the guys from wearing shorts. In fact most of the crowd were teenagers which seemed fitting for the dominantly teenage-filled bands performing. Perhaps this is a promising outlook for the Tri-City underground music scene. “If it gets big enough we’re going to bring it over to the Toyota Center and hopefully get a couple thousand of people to come” Waddell said. Maybe – just maybe – these bands will carry over their audiences as they grow older cementing the demand for more local bands. As for Mortal Remains after buying a new guitar for their lead guitarist and a bass amp they joke about buying a nice dinner at Denny’s with their grand prize money. Gotta love these hometown boys with hearts of gold.

Gauntlet – Mar 19, 2007
I’m just sick of people saying things like ‘omg they are death metal it means they are evil and hate life’ they aren’t and i know this has nothing to do with this article but i want people to understand that they are normal people like us. Sarah She is imesley (sp?) pretty and so sweet Paul he’s mistrous (sp?) from what i saw. Dani He smiles all the time and is so polite. Rosie she seems really sweet they all do. I can’t remember the rest of them but they are so sweet… Anywho back to the article. The seventh album is amazing. The music is brilliant and the lyrics are fantasic. Its by far better than nypmhetamine but I do prefer midian. com’>Amy Student : Views expressed are those of the posters and do not necessarily reflect that of the Gauntlet.
