Slayer Boulder Philharmonic & Thunderbirds Are Now!
Denver Post – Feb 7, 2007
They ooze more credibility in death-metal circles than a pentagram. Evidence abounded at their Jan. 31 Fillmore show a sold-out shredfest that combined classics from “Reign Blood” and “South of Heaven” with tracks from the new disc “Christ Illusion. ” Kicking off with a song from 2001’s “God Hates Us All” the band barely paused in its unerringly technical sonic assault. Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman’s lightning-quick riffs Dave Lombardo’s pummeling rhythms and Tom Araya’s menacing vocals interlocked to form a violently loud wall of sound… But its smaller size proved to be a drawback in the large-scale “Dances” where the orchestra’s sound seemed thin especially in the strings. |Kyle MacMillan Thunderbirds Are Now! This Detroit band knows how to make a racket. Its music cracks and pops and crunches and fizzles and the live show is legendary. But what was most surprising about TAN!’s show at the Larimer Lounge on Feb. 3 was the band’s lack of a cogent live show – let alone a cohesive live sound. The sudden piercing screech of metal-on-metal destroyed the tranquillity of that morning and transformed Martina’s life irrevocably. "I called my husband’s name but he didn’t reply. There was such an eerie silence. I was sure that he was dead. He told me later that the force of the impact meant that he was unable to speak for a couple of seconds even though he could hear my frantic shouts… He told the hushed auditorium that the images of broken bodies and twisted limbs will be with him forever. "A scene of carnage broken bodies and death usually greets me. Sometimes I feel so helpless as there is nothing I can do for some of the victims. They are already gone when I get there. " He urged the students to "respect the road and respect speed as the road will not respect you". Michael Comer a Fire fficer with Mayo Fire Service spoke of the terrible injuries that can be sustained during a car crash.
