LoveHateHero: White Lies < Music | PopMatters
PopMatters – Feb 20, 2007
With the current emocore trend reaching critical mass as young bands become overnight successes thanks to one catchy tune a carefully-primped hairstyle and in excess of 100000 MySpace “friends” it seems more and more acts are forming without fully realizing that there’s a lot more to paying one’s dues than streaming an MP3 on the Internet. Take range County’s LoveHateHero for instance. They impressed Ferret Records so much with their self-financed debut album that the trendy label inks them to a sweet deal. Four tours later vocalist Pierrick Berube and bassist Paris Bosserman found themselves suddenly abandoned by the other three members with one of them absconding with the band’s tour van… While more and more post-hardcore bands try desperately to come up with some kind of gimmick to separate themselves from their fellow preening pubescent peers LoveHateHero takes a simpler approach working within the rather clichéd framework of the sound (equally derived from Thursday and A Wilhelm Scream) and coming up with some songs that might not exactly take the genre into bold new territory but display enough capable song craft and technical ability to raise a few eyebrows. In fact the approach the band takes on White Lies is not unlike budding Canadian stars Silverstein in that the ferocious metalcore riffs appeal to the guys while the inescapable vocal hooks appeal to the girls with the quintet careful not to offend either side. Gruft is the real revelation here as the kid lets loose a terrific power metal solo that walks the line between ‘80s excess and tasteful expressiveness. “You Got Served” is downright metal in its arrangement the rhythm section forming a mighty anchor during the muscular breakdown while the opening salvos of the chugging “To the End” could pass for something by At the Gates or In Flames; so effective is the blend of aggression and melody on the latter track that an underachieving band like As I Lay Dying can learn a thing or two from these youngsters. LoveHateHero is not above trying a little tenderness too and the drippy-yet-catchy “Amity” is an effective emocore ballad Bossington providing Michael Anthony-like harmony vocals underneath Berube’s confident melodies. “Move n” hints at the more spacious sounds of Thrice while the admittedly lovely “Red Dress” is built around a piano melody and Gruft’s chiming lead fills.
Jesu: Conqueror < Music | PopMatters
PopMatters – Feb 20, 2007
So insistent is this song in fact that Parsons wakes up from his lugubrious trance and actually taps out eighth notes on hi-hat and ride cymbal which for Jesu is breakneck speed. Ever the maverick Justin K Broadrick is not one to rely on a set formula that so many bands influenced by him have lazily done in years past; instead he continues to challenge his listeners. n Conqueror he all but dares metal fans to accept the gentle beauty of his music to acknowledge that it’s okay to take extreme sounds and make them pretty. For everyone else he has crafted one of the loveliest guitar-based records of 2007. Extreme music rarely if ever sounds this warm and inviting.

(20-FEB-07) The Christian Century. " Today’s Christian musicians follow that call into vistas that David could never have foreseen fr… If one could reduce sacred music to slideshow archetypes featuring a gospel choir a praise band and a slick Christian music act the Psalters might be depicted as a crude tribe of ragmen and women giving in to Walt Whitman’s “barbaric yawp” as they wrestle with brokenness temptation and demons too frightening to name and with the shudder-surrender to Truth itself. A self-described nomadic tribe “walking in the footsteps of ancients past” the Psalters take their cue from the temple musicians of 3000 years ago: “‘They were people intending to glorify God through music” the group states on its Web site.

And Thomas will be right there with him as morphing respondent engaging in their wonderful shadow play of twangy harmonies while they strut and race through tempos. These three players enjoy an enviable rapport and are mastering the perfect blue-note frequency to communicate. Last year was all about death for me—including that of rock ‘n’ roll. Finally there was pain music could not overcome. But just when I lost my hearing Earl Greyhound and their fine record arrived as an ace boon. The passing of such titans as my mother and rock ‘n’ roll kings JB and Arthurly brought stark clarity and so I cannot hustle y’all. If I say Earl Greyhound are the genuine article I mean that shit and their ascent makes this the perfect season to return to the City.

Disney World Trivia – Feb 20, 2007
I agree there is definitely a difference between those of us who go regularly versus others who don’t have that same advantage of time and distance on their side. Having gone only once every few years on average during my childhood I definitely remember marking off the days on the calender until we hopped on the big metal bird and flew on down to “Mickey’s House” just about a full year in advance. And I clearly remember feeling the need to just drop the bags at the resort and run full speed to the Magic Kingdom as soon as we could. Because there was no feeling in the world more overwhelming and special than passing under Main Street Station and just gazing down Main Street USA with all its sights the people bustling about the smell of popcorn in the air and the sound of one of the WDWRR steam engines blowing its whistle and clanging its bell as it pulled into the station behind me. And just beyong all that reaching high up into the bright blue Florida sky… I’m always more than willing to go especially if I get the chance to go with someone who has either never been or just hasn’t been in a long time because their joys of “discovering” Disney helps me to remember my beginnings. But I do admit that if I find myself going back to a park that I just did to death a week or two ago the excitement level is toned down about two notches. Fortunately unlike Universal Studios Florida (where I once held one of their 2-park Annual Passes back in 2003) Disney has lots to offer. With my Disney passes when I found myself getting tired of riding the same attractions or seeing the same shows I just make myself try something I’m not as familiar with. For example instead of riding the Haunted Mansion 7 or 8 times a day like I often do (probably my favorite attraction.
