Place: A concert hall on the University at Buffalo’s Amherst Campus. The name of the student group — a piano bass drums jazz trio — is Thermopylae named after the place where the outnumbered Greeks in battle held off Xerxes’ Persians. The music is pleasant student jazz; the pianist and bassist are able student players but not much more. It is immediately apparent though that the drummer is sensational. In the concert’s second half the band comes out after intermission to do a little sarcastic musical performance art to indicate that as Madison Avenue might have it this is not your father’s jazz trio. They come out in berets fake goatees and mock-beatnik garb and play a strenuously over-cool pseudo-hip blues thereby simultaneously sending up some jazz mythology and a whole branch of jazz audience reception. Bobby Previte the young monster drummer however isn’t playing drums in this piece.

Kittie’s gig at the Nutcracker came shortly before metal band Flyleaf led by vocalist Lacey Mosley opened for Disturbed at the Peoria Civic Center. The trend doesn’t stop there. From the murky rock of Evanescence and Lacuna Coil – fronted by Amy Lee and Cristina Scabbia respectively – to the Swedish death metal outfit Arch Enemy led by frontwoman Angela Gossow women are taking center stage in heavy music. “The girls are out there kind of like going ‘Hey we can rock just as hard as the guys’” Bahan said… Women have always been a fixture in rock – from Janis Joplin to Heart to Courtney Love – but the hyperaggressive sounds of groups like Kittie marked a distinct shift toward hard-core metal Bahan said. He describes Kittie’s early albums as “really really heavy. And when you listened to their music it was like blood-curdling crazy metal. It was almost unlistenable their first album. ” Like fellow metal groups Disturbed Godsmack and Mudvayne Kittie gradually merged mayhem with melody Bahan said. It’s a shift that plays to the group’s strength particularly with vocals. n cuts from Kittie’s forthcoming album “Funeral for Yesterday” (due Feb.

jpg” >Media Credit: Matt WilkinsonIf you wondered around the 2006 Vans Warped Tour it’s likely that you came across band after band of acne-faced teenagers covered in makeup screaming about a lost love that probably is made up. Welcome to today’s music scene. But if you were lucky you might have stumbled across the distinct sound of Gym Class Heroes. This Geneva New York foursome has declared war on the cookie-cutter sound of the Warped Tour scene by fusing elements of hip-hop emo early ’80s pop rap and rock into one very distinct sound that has elevated the band out of the trenches and into the mainstream. Gym Class Heroes’ front man Travis McCoy has something about him that demands attention. His towering stature bushy unibrow and curly hair make him reminiscent of Sideshow Bob from television’s “The Simpsons… “It’s a weird thing but at the same time we’ve never fit in anywhere” McCoy said. “Coming up there was never a scene for us. We would play shows with anything from death metal bands to jam bands. We’ve never fit in to any particular scene. I think kids are just looking for something fresh. The music was fresh and the band’s Fueled By Ramen debut album “The Papercut Chronicles” was a success. After touring with Fall ut Boy Emery and the Vans Warped Tour the Heroes went to work on a follow up.
