f them all only Liars could qualify for a feature in Terrorizer. Metal’s rise to the forefront of hipster consciousness seems symbolic. If all art aspires to the condition of music then you might say that all art-music vanguards now aspire to the condition of metal. Recruiting a fresh crop of “soldiers of darkness” each year metal represents a model of subcultural stamina over the long haul (while also holding the possibility of erupting into the mainstream every seven years or so). If noise and dubstep don’t envy metal’s infrastructural stability and the fanatical loyalty it commands they should. « Previous Page 1 2 Recent ArticlesMore by Simon ReynoldsThe People vs. Vampire WeekendHow a band so polite and so rapturous inspired that much hatredAtypical Girlsn the arty artful and “artless” forest-pop of RingsReasons to Be Cheerful (Just Three)If 2006′s musical slate seems bleak just look to the occasionally goofy but still exhilarating extremesDust DevilsThe romance of the secondhand storeProgtronic Space-Funkers Blast Disco Ball Deep into Galaxy.

It’s a lot more punky than before but not too hectic. Death-rock is an American term. Instead of electro and metal it includes spooky rock’n'roll and gothabilly. It’s closer to the stuff I listened to growing up in Portsmouth. Goth was gradual for me. I started wearing black first bits of jewellery a bit of makeup… It is played absolutely everywhere and after hearing it a thousand times you eventually want something else. In the UK the scene can be a little conservative a little sensible. You go to something like the Gothic Pogo Party in Leipzig and the music range is broader. You’ll hear post-punk and minimal and see loads of beautiful girls dancing in torn fishnets with hair two feet in the air. When I was a teen it took two hours to get ready. Now some of the younger goths just put on black and a bit of eyeliner. I love hearing new music that gives me the same sense of discovery I had as a teenager.

n their debut album Dread Champions of the Last Days Sleeping Giant showcase an impressive range of song-styling that is rarely seen on a hardcore album. Blame It n The Holy Rollers freshly posted on the bands myspace boasts extensive guest death-vocals by Brook Reeves of Impending Doom. Please welcome Sleeping Giant to the Facedown Family. You can see them next month locally in Rialto and Newport Beach and in March at Facedown Fest. Check the bands myspace for details. BIGRAPHYSleeping Giant represent a great and terrible day when all living things will return to dust; and their sound is as formidable as one might suspect the apocalypse should be… Sleeping Giant charged onto the Redlands CA scene in 2006 with their bold and powerful live show where in addition to being entranced by ominous guitars crowds are met with burning passion from articulate front man Thom Green. The sincerity behind the words that pour out from Greens mouth is deeply rooted in the bands unwavering love for their fellow man. Sleeping Giant are resolute in their goal to reach as many people as possible with their message of repentance; but their music is anything but single-minded. The diversity of sound on their debut Dread Champions of the Last Days is striking and listeners will find the bands ability to morph seamlessly from one track to the next to be unforgettable.

Should it be somebody one of his descendants or could it be somebody from his inner circle as the Sunnis believe? So you can imagine that the martyrdom the killing of the grandson of Mohammed somebody from one of his descendants has a huge affect on the Shia populations and they celebrated it as a day of mourning. As you say kind of wearing black. They beat themselves with metal chains on their backs on their heads and they do these pilgrimages to the burial site of Hussein the grandson of Mohammed. CH: Yes the live pictures of the crowds were just incredible that we saw this morning. You know this big attack and this plot that was foiled on Sunday there were claims of responsibility from this group called “Soldiers of Heaven. ” Have you heard of this group? GALLAGHER: We don’t know a lot about them. They seem to be a faction made up both of Sunnis and Shias following the Sunni line of belief that there is going to be a return of someone they called the 12th Imam and this is kind of an apocalyptic vision of the last descendant of Mohammed who is this 12th Imam who will come back and usher in a period of peace… So that’s very important to combine those two plus get your doctor of course to do a breast exam every year. CH: And just another quick question about the outlook for people who are diagnosed — the outlook is pretty good isn’t it? CHEN: It is. Many people think breast cancer is a death sentence and that really was more or less true decades and decades ago. However that is s not so true anymore. And some of these statistics come as a surprise to many people. So let’s take a look at this next myth. The next myth is that breast cancer is a death sentence.
