Enslaved – Dark Funeral – Music – Review – New York Times
New York Times – Jan 12, 2007
The band’s banners depicted an upside-down cross inside a pentagram along with a not-so-coded message: DCLXVI. The members of Enslaved are far less theatrical (no face paint no armor) and their set began unassumingly enough with the chugging midtempo guitar line from a song called “Path to Vanir. ” Grutle Kjellson the lead singer and bassist croaked the lyrics (”Awaiting my death gasping for air” et cetera) but the music never exploded into metal mayhem. The first Enslaved album was a split CD with the pioneering black-metal band Emperor but since then the members of Enslaved have found their own path drawing from 1970s progressive-rock to create albums that are both icy and elegant. In 2005 Enslaved released “Isa” (Candelight) an engrossing CD that builds to a 12-minute finale “Neogenesis. ” Last year came “Ruun” (Candelight) which is slower and more abstract and maybe even better. pen-minded Tool fans among others should seek it out.

“This record’s a bit more European-sounding I think. More so than we already were if you can imagine that. The solo stuff has a black metal-ish flavor to it. We messed around with that a little bit previously but some of the songs have a major Dissection kind of feel to them. Lyrically Strnad said the record — due in the fall — will be “more horror-oriented” than Miasma. “As far as gore and death and stuff like that goes I mean that’s all been done — into the ground” he said. “I am just trying to do something like that but with my own flavor to it… We messed around with that a little bit previously but some of the songs have a major Dissection kind of feel to them. Flirting with Hitler
guardian.co.uk – Jan 12, 2007
The regional newspaper the Rheinische Post discovered that at the 1998 general election campaign in Germany Daniel had canvassed for the National-Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) a far right party that the government has since tried to outlaw (the matter is currently before the Constitutional Court). n the witness stand Lewa said that after the election Daniel drifted out of the skinhead world and into the Gothic scene. He began listening to “black metal” music a variant of heavy metal and at one time played in a band called the Bloodsucking Freaks. It was through a black metal fanzine in fact that he met Manuela after placing an ad that read: “Black-haired vampire seeks princess of darkness who despises everything and everybody and has bidden farewell to life. ” Daniel 26 broke contact with Lewa after a row at a party. Lewa told the court that he had received a letter from his erstwhile friend in July a few days before the Rudas killed Hackert. In it Daniel called Lewa a Judas and enclosed a photograph of himself covered in blood and apparently hanging from hooks in the ceiling… His brother who lives in Apold runs a black metal label Darker Than Black. In the days that followed the murder of Frank Hackert the Rudas embarked on a kind of pilgrimage to places that in their minds linked the far right and the occult – to Jena Sonderhausen and Apold. It is possible they planned to do more than visit: on the death list police discovered in the Rudas’ flat was the name of the mother of the boy whom Hendrik Möbus and his friends had murdered seven years earlier. Links between Nazism and esoteric and occult movements are nothing new. Hitler rejecting Christianity embraced instead the paganism of the early Germanic tribes. Their beliefs both real and imagined offered a basis on which any number of sinister concepts could be superimposed. The process reached its apogee at Schloss Wewelsburg near the town of Paderborn.

I don’t turn on the stereo in the car. I grab a CD and enjoy from there. Satellite radio is going to be the death of anything on free radio right now. Even I have contemplated buying Sirius radio but I think music on the radio should be free! I hate not being able to hear anything I like. I don’t want to pay for the satellite radio but that’s what its coming down to. And there are so many channels categorized by the music you enjoy listening to. I like a lot of underground alternative bands music that I can relate to.

Travel: Revisiting the Black Experience in Vietnam
American Heritage – Jan 12, 2007
Black the exhibit’s curator adds “The way I look at this history is not to find a new topic but to take an old topic and look at it with a new perspective. ” To prepare for “Soul Soldiers” he did scholarly research talked to veterans and worked in partnership with organizations including Black Vietnam Veterans Inc. The resulting multimedia exhibit features oral histories photographs and music as well as close to 200 artifacts that reveal some of the surprising ways African-Americans expressed themselves while surviving the war. There is a uniform with the words “black and proud” meticulously stitched on a pocket and there are banners made by black soldiers to display at their barracks. You can read from letters and diaries including a heartbreaking colorfully illustrated letter a family received from their son the same day they got the telegram reporting his death. In a section on casualties you can view a metal spike that was lodged in Sgt. John Clark’s foot after he stepped on a booby trap.

Back then they used a lot of crude metal carving images almost as propaganda. It was kind of like scaring people about going to hell or whatever. A lot of it had to do with devils and death and stuff like that. They were eventually banned. Now that the album’s music is also ‘in the can’ Machine Head will embark on a TUR with Trivium Lamb of God and Gojira starting February 16th – get your tickets today.
