But the biggest surprise of the year is the knockout disc by newcomers Aly & AJ two sisters whose remarkable talent and infectious enthusiasm make even the most familiar holiday fare sound fresh and exciting. Not all sister acts shine this holiday however. The good news is that Dee Snider and company say it will be Twisted Sister’s final album. Here’s a roundup of some of the more notable Christmas discs of 2006: — “Acoustic Hearts of Winter” Aly & AJ (Hollywood). Aly & AJ seem to wrap every note they sing or play with enthusiasm elevating their music above today’s crowded field of pop music and in this case the rest of this year’s holiday albums. The Michalka sisters play piano and guitar and blend their voices with the mystical.

Their apartment was in a small complex with wrought-iron railings on West Bellfort. Built in the ’70s during Houston’s oil boom most of those complexes were once swinging: privacy gates and a washer and dryer in every unit. But their metal gates have fallen into disrepair and the grass has turned to dust. Gangs are everywhere. At night a single gunshot doesn’t stir anyone out of bed. During the summer months Gabriel worked landscaping with his dad. For extra money he painted apartment doors then spent his earnings downstairs where a woman sold Hot Fries and Gatorade through her window.

EP 15 112 mins THEATRE The Lightning Play Charlotte Jones has written an acid comedy of bad manners and a tragedy of good intentions: a play of love death and black humour. Eleanor David and Matthew Marsh lead a cast that combines intelligence with brilliant acting. JP Almeida N1 ART David Smith Big abstract sculptures made of welded metal some rescued from piles of junk in a visually arresting exhibition staged to mark the centenary of their maker’s birth. He’s the American David Smith (1906-65) and his work is always extremely masculine and physical. Jewish artisans — jewellers metal workers masons ceramicists — shaped the country’s rich culture of craft and design. Jewish musicians were conduits for its classical tradition of Andalusian music. Jews in Morocco were scholars poets slave traders and bandits. Under the French and Spanish colonial powers some Jews enjoyed privileged status and acted as agents of the foreign powers; others helped build left wing parties and trades unions. Shared fortunes As People of the Book Jews in Morocco enjoyed subordinate but protected status… There were Jewish merchants courtiers and doctors; Jewish barbers peddlers peasants and labourers.
